"The team did not seem to be able to resolve the handling problems the bike suffered from ," Lucchiari said . " Besides, I think that the Ducati 888 I rode last year suits my riding style better." Lucchiari rode a Ducati that he obtained through David e Tardozzi in the Italian round at Misano , finishing fifth in the first leg and third in the second. Another impressive off-road feat was turned in by 15-year-old Jason Greer at the May 21 AMA Na tional Amateur Day Har e Scrambles at Bud ds Creek, Maryland. Gr eer, from Smithfield, Virginia, rode a Yamaha YZ80 to the overall win, finishing '35 second s ahead of his nearest competitor . Th e Ca sey Cycle City /Texaco-Havoline / Regin a-spon sored rider pulled off the win against ad ult riders on full-sized bikes. Entered in the B cla ss, Gr eer started a minute behind the A d ivision, but physically passed the entire A class before fading slightly late in the race. On elapsed time, however, Greer was still the winner. AMA Di strict 37 will h old th e EI Mirage Dry Lake team hare scrambles at the EI Mirage Dry Lake OHV recre ation area on Sunday, Jun e 19, to benefit the District 37 legal defense fund which goes toward fig h ting land use issues such as the recently pa ssed S21 and its companion bill HR518. The event - which has traditionally ru n from Paris, Fran ce, to Dakar, Senegal - has seen several start- and finish-location changes in the past several years . In 1992, th e ra ce ran from Pa ris to Capetown, South Africa, before returning to its normal rou te last year. In '94, the route again ran from Paris to Dakar, bu t then returned back to the start in Paris. Next year , the rally will feature a differe nt start area, in Gre nada, Spain, but will again finish in Dakar. The racewhich is sche d uled for Jan uary 1-15, will be shorter in length and duration, but the course will be more technical. According to Jean-Claude Kill y of TSO, the rally will also be more affordable thi s year. In a d ditio n, it h as been an n o un ced th at Fren chm an Hub er t Auriol will head up the organization of the rally for TSO. Auriol won the event on factory-backed BMWs in 1981 and '83, and again in a car in '92. He is still a factory d river for Citroen, but will retire at the end of the year, before the rally.
