ROSAMOND CA, MAY 14-15 , Chuck Graves logged h is seco nd consec u tive victory in the Toyota Cup Unlimi ted Road Race by Bud weiser Formula One seri es at the fjfth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club racing at Willow Springs International Raceway. Graves grabbed th e race lead early in the fir st lap on h is Valvo line /S uz u ki-sponso red Suzuki GSXR1100 but was under heavy pressure from Brad Hazen . Jim VanVegten was running in third d uring the early going. but was pushed back to fourth at the beginning of lap two when he was passed by Jeff Stem on the front straight. As Grav es and Hazen started la p th re e, Hazen was in Graves' dr aft and looked poised to pass . However, Hazen 's motorcycle sudde nly started spewing smoke and it looked as thou gh he had blown an engine. Fearing oil on the racetra ck, the red flags we re thrown and the race was stopped . All riders were ab le to stop withou t incident. An inves tigation while wai ting for the race rest art show ed tha t Hazen had simply los t a plu g on the side of his Ducati's engine, allowing the oil to escape. A qu ick fix allowed Hazen to en ter the to-lap race restart. The top three racers in the first start emerged in the same spots the second time around, with Gra ves taking the lea d followed by Hazen in second and Stem third . As the laps progressed , Graves solid ified his lead and Hazen was soon running a comfortable second . A battl e then developed between Stem and Kent Kuni tsugu for the third pla ce fin ish. For mos t of the race, Kunitsugu wou ld pass Stem in tum two and hold onto th ird place for nearly the entire leng th of t he co urse. Ho w ever , Stern wo uld manage to pow er pas t Kunitsugu on the fron t straigh t. This pattern repeated itse lf on every lap , including the final one. As a result, Stem finished third behind the winner, Graves, and second- placed Hazen. In the Maxima Racing Oil Formula Two race, Jason Paden needed only a lap to establish his hold on the race lead and bega n sepa rating himself from the rest of the pack. But as fate wou ld have it, with only two laps left in the race, Paden crashed goi ng into turn eigh t. With Pad en 's unexpected exit, Mark McDona ld found himself in the lead with Kunit sugu in seco nd . At the line, McDonald took the win folllowed by Kunitsugu and Michael Barn es. Results f..l : 1. Holley hammers 'em at LACR Motocross By Greg Robertson PAlMDALE, CA MAY 15 , With the lure of Yamaha continge ncy money on the line, Jim "Ho llyw ood " Holley mad e a visit to Los Ange les County Raceway to do ba ttle with the California Racing Club regulars and went home a do uble win ner, topping both the 250cc Pro and Vet Exper t classes du ring the second round of the 17th annua l Dunes town series. Tracy Asher grabbed the first 250cc Pro mot o holeshot, bu t Ho lley mad e his in tenti ons clear by taking control on lap two . Bill Sauro also p ut the move on Asher for second place and dosed in on Ho lley, who landed hard off the Kal Gard tower jump and drifted wide in the following tum. This allowed Sauro room un d ern eath to s tea l the lead . Holl ey s tuc k to the wheels of Sauro for the next few laps and fina lly slammed his way into the top spot with a textbook block pa ss. On the final circu it, Sau ro let it all hang out, making numerous atte mpl:s to take over the lead , but Holley took the wi n inches ahead of him. Asher finished a distant third with Owen Dickson fourt h. ~ Moto two started where the first mota left off, wi th Sauro all over Holle y' s ba ck fender. Sauro misjudged the am ou nt of trac tion upon landing off a jump and crashed back to last place. Asher inherited the runner-up position and started closing on Holley. Asher got around Holl ey, but hi s lead only last ed a few turns before his front end wa shed out and he went down . A de termined Sau ro had wo rked all the way back to second place, and with a coup le of lap s remainin g, wa s only five second s off of Holley's pace and closing rap idly. With the white nag ou t, it became a tworider sp rin t to the finish with Holley taking the win b y two b ike length s ov er Sauro. Asher recovered for third ahead of Joel Tokarsky. ' Brad Mel.cod and Holley went at it head to head in the first Vet Expert race with Holl ey finally makin g a pass that would stick late in the moto. Mcleod kept Holley honest all the way to the finish. Ken Neitze l worked throughout the pack for third, with Leo Saul fourth. McLeod rocketed his CRSOO to the secondmoto holesh o t and ran out fron t until a slight off-track excursion handed the lead to Holley on lap two. Mcleod closed to Holley's back wheel and hounded him all the way to the checkered nag for a close race. Neit zel, Saul and Rodney Morriso n rounded out the top five. • I Results P/ W 8-2: 1.
