last leg b efore com ing in so that I could 've had enough t ime b efore im poun d for a fres h re a r tire for the moto. I still might have a chance to win if Rodney ha sn' t sp anked me too bad wi th his test scores today." The outcome came down to the fina l 'special mot ocross tes t, which was he ld at th e Th urston County DRV Pa rk MX track located at the starting area. Davis was in third place and trailed Smith by a seemingly uncatchable 23 seconds; TrolIi was righ t behind Smith, just tw o seconds back. At the d rop o f the g a te , Smith gra bbed the holeshot, but an aggressive Da vis soon took th e lead early in th e e ig h t-la p race . Trolli fe ll back when Dav is and Smith began to clear the 50foot-plus double jumps, while the rest of , the 10 riders chose to single them. Davis held on to his moto lead and edged Smi th to the checkered flag by one second. By doing so, he guaran teed himself a second overall finis h by beating Trolli, who finished a distant fourth, 24 seconds back. Trolli admitted that American MXstyle special test were no t his forte. "I've never jumped a motorcycle over a set of double jumps until last week (at Tillamook), I was leading that test so I said, 'Why not?' Then I crashed and ended up in third. In Europe the FIM doesn't allow doubles. Today, during the last lap, I tried (the doubles) and made it. I think this is crazy." Day two competition was marred by an accident that sent Pat Garrahan to the hospital. Garrahan, las t year's only ISDE Ll.S, Juni or World Tro phy team finisher, was thrown from his motorcycle and hit a tree . Kawasaki's Larry Roeseler tra iled Garrahan by three points w hen th e y started day two, and had already made up the deficit by beating him in both terrain tests. He enjoyed a 50-second lead ov er Ga rr aha n w hen the accident happened. Roeseler sai d: "Pat and I rod e on the sa me min u te both days and I h ad bee n lead ing when I missed the tra il. Pat took the lead an d that's w hen the acciden t happened. "I never saw the crash , bu t I w as p robabl y a sp lit-second behind him. It loo ked like he swapped out in this real w hooped -ou t section tha t had a lot of roo ts and hit a tree h ead-on. He was reall y messed up when I found him. He had pretty bad facial injuries, was missin g a couple of tee th and had a broken (left) wrist. He nev er blacked out, but he was in major pai n. Afte r a few minutes, Pa t s t a r te d to remember what happened, and we started tal king. He sta rted a sking me about some of my past injuries. It kind of chokes you up when they finall y com e to ge t him. Pat's a real good kid and he's going to recover." Roe seIer stayed with Garrahan for a p p roxi m a te ly an h our until help arrived . He made it to the next check 55 minutes late, but was allowed to assume a ne w sch ed ule. Roesel er wen t on to win his final moto, finishing 14th overall and win ni n g the Lightweight Four-Stroke class by ov e r 250 secon ds. Fin ishing behind Roeseler was Honda rider Cu rt Wilco x. In the Ligh twe igh t division, bad luck caught up to McLaughlin during d ay two. After the first test, Mclaughlin had fallen to second pla ce behind Mark Kerling by two seconds. "Hawkins caught me on the second test," said Mclaughlin. "After I let him go by, I just tried to s ta y w ith h im when I blew off the course. I was stuck down on this cliff about 50 feet off the trail. I had to drag m y bike back up on the tra il. I lost about 20 minutes." Hawkins was on a rampage, trying to ma ke up for a disappointing day-one pe rform ance which had left him fifth in class and 12th overall. "Yesterday I ha d n othin g b ut prob lems ou t there, an d today I ha d to ma ke up 37 seconds," he sai d. "Things went pretty good up until the end of the day, when the steering head started to seize . Turning go t kin d of tricky." Hawkins' efforts lifted him second in cla ss, just four seconds behind Kerling and sixth overall. He had three top -five overa ll special tes t scores on day two. Kerling finished fifth overall. In the He avyweight Fou r- St ro ke class, John N ielson held on to his twom inute day-one lead ove r Da n H arte, despite a problem with his bike early on day two. "I snapped my chain right in two, and had to run the firs t tes t wi th it," he said. "Lucki ly, I could tem por arily fix it with a spare master link . I replaced the chain at the altern a te gas, and was able to continue." (Above) italian Davlde Tralll waa the overall leade r after the first day of competi tion but slipped to third on the second day. Greg Zi tterkopf h a d won the first tw o tests in that class on da y one, when a sto ma ch virus forced him to p ull out of th e race before check five. "Things were going pretty good out there, when all of a sudd en it floored me," said Zitterkopf. "I started get ting the chills and the sha kes, and I jus t knew I coul dn't go on."
