He then set after McGrath, reeled him in, passed the Honda rider and set sail after the leader, Kiedrowski. LaR occo slowly b ut s u rely closed the gap on his teammate, b ut could never get cl ose enough to mount a serious challenge. "He (LaRocco) gained a little bit on me there the last couple of laps because so me of the lappers were getting in my way," sa id Kiedrowski of LaRocco 's la te-race charge . Desp ite climbing to second after his mid -pack s ta rt, laRocco w as less tha n thrilled about finishing seco nd to h is teammate. "Th at w asn ' t w ha t I w as look in g for," said laRocco. Yamaha privateer rider Je ff Ma tiasevich started the moto in n inth but dropped to 11th, while Suzuki 's Phil Lawrence climbed back after tangling handlebars with another rider and going down just a few feet beyond the starting ga te. Lawrence finished a respectable 12th o ut of the 40-rider field . McGrath again p ulled ou t to a huge lead after the ga te dropped in the second moto and stayed there until both laRocco and Kiedrowski latched onto his rear fender ne ar th e midway point. .
