reeled him in, passed the Honda rider
and set sail after the leader, Kiedrowski.
LaR occo slowly b ut s u rely closed the
gap on his teammate, b ut could never
get cl ose enough to mount a serious
challenge.
"He (LaRocco) gained a little bit on
me there the last couple of laps because
so me of the lappers were getting in my
way," sa id Kiedrowski of LaRocco 's
la te-race charge .
Desp ite climbing to second after his
mid -pack s ta rt, laRocco w as less tha n
thrilled about finishing seco nd to h is
teammate.

for," said laRocco.
The top 10 riders crossed the finish
line fairly spread ou t, with McGrath taking third , app roxi m a te ly 15 second s

finis hed fifth, th ough he was closely follow ed across the line by h is teammate
Brian Swink in sixth. Dowd fini shed a

Lewis' teammate Larry Brooks completed the top 10. Yamaha privateer rider
Je ff Ma tiasevich started the moto in
n inth but dropped to 11th, while Suzuki 's Phil Lawrence climbed back after
tangling handlebars with another rider
and going down just a few feet beyond
the starting ga te. Lawrence finished a
respectable 12th o ut of the 40-rider field .
McGrath again p ulled ou t to a huge
lead after the ga te dropped in the second moto and stayed there until both
laRocco and Kiedrowski latched onto
his rear fender ne ar th e midway point. .

Kiedrowsk i of McGrath's ea rly lead s.
"We (Kie d ro w s k i a n d La Roc co ) had
some tra ffic at first, bu t we sta rted to
ca tch him (McG ra th ) and 1 knew we'd
ge t him. He's certainly riding we ll, but
I think ou r pac e was a li ttle faster and
he ca n 't keep that p ace up the whole
race."
La Rocco a nd Kie drows ki q u ick ly
pu lled away from McGrath as they battled for the lead . At about the 20-minute

last race at High Point the previous yea r.

had a tremendous battle for the lead In the
second 125cc moto. Emlg finally pas sed
Hughes two laps from the end to win the
mete, Hughes ended up second overall by
posting 4-2 moto finishes, while Emlg
ended up third with a 7·1.

"I ha d a good line in the back," said
Kied ro w sk i. "I'd take the in side lin e
through these jumps and stay low to the
ground, while everyone else went to the
right and caug ht a lot of air."
At thi s po in t, eyeryone was expecting aJ a te-race duel to the finish, b ut the
Kiedrowski/LaRocco shootout n ever
really materialized , as Kiedrows ki managed to stretch out his lead o ve r his
team ma te ever so sli gh tly d uring the
las t couple of laps.
The two riders sailed over the finishli ne ju m p a fe w b ike len gths a part,
Kiedrowski with both fists pumped in to
the air in celebra tion.
