I volun teer my tim e as a tu rn marshall for the SCCA San Francisco region and th e AFM mo torcycle ro ad -racing or gani zation in North ern Ca li forn ia . Having spent the past six years wo rking at Sears Poin t, Lagu na Seca and our new SCCA track at Thunder Hill, I know both sides of the fence regarding safety in au to and motorcycle racing at the pro and semi-pro level. The AMA is making a very successful a ttemp t to ga in a market share in television. This is a need th at all of us who know the sport, and realize what it takes to ma ke the American public realize the we alth of talen t (we have) and domination our young riders hold in the world, appreciate. Thank God for Kenny Roberts' v ision to bring the Un ited States Grand Prix back to America . I have a ve ry close friend who is a Natio nal-level rider campaigning the 750cc Supersport class. Having watched him progress thro ugh the ranks of our local classes to this spo t with factory su p p or t is wonderful. When I heard from his father of the unsafe cond itions at Pomona, I was ho rr ified. The cond itions there seem ed a close second to the boycotted World Superbike race in Mexico City last year. I pl ead with the AMA to make the sp ort safe for our young lions. They d o no t have collapsible fram es, roll cages or safety' harnesses. Motorcycle road racing is dangerous and al so bea u tiful. The risks are always present, bu t we do not need to su ffer the pa in we all felt when Wayne Rainey went down and changed all of our lives. The AMA ha s the responsibility to make the courses safe and market a program that is good for the sport. That is why I support th e AMA and pay my dues annually. Harrie Dennison San ta Clara, CA Eastern Office 4188 First Ave., Tucker, GA,30084; mailingaddress P.O. Box 805 , Tucker, GA 30085-0805. (404) 934-7850. FAX (404) 9343112 In response to Mr. Scott Kistner's let ter ("Voices," Issue 18, May 11), I think you are off base in w anting Damon Bradshaw to retu rn to H igh Po int. Maybe yo u 've fo r gott en a ll the interviews about one-lined and poorly prepared tracks. I feel motocross fans should be as ki ng for the return of Jean-Michel Bayle. Not only did he show Americans how to win, but he also sh owed how to gracefully take the bad. When a close call with his teammate Jeff Stanton se n t him over the b ars, injuring his shoulder, he basically said: "We are teammates, b ut sometimes we race each other too much." He d idn't call the tracks "one-lined" bu t inst ead said they were " technical" an d fo und places to pass . And J.M.B. never talked of winning one week and then qu it the nex t. Everyone knew when he was leaving at the beginning of the season. He wa s b oo e d fo r wi nni ng, a n d cheered when h e crashe d. But h e was always polite. So I th in k our wishes w ould be better spen t on J.M.B. As for Jeff Emi g, J.M.B. never put an Alpi ne Star to an yone's hea d . If you n eed a Yamaha rider to cheer for, tr y Mi ke Craig - he's a nice guy, a fast rider and he needs a little help fro m the cheering section. Dam on, p lease stay home. Greg Fin ley Win field, KS It is starting to look as though Bayle has .found a new home in Grand Prix road rac, ing. In only his second season, the Frenchman sits in eighth place in the 250cc World Championship point standings...Editor. Gods peed, AI In Dayt ona Beach on May 9, Al Eames rode away on the fina l trail we shall all find . On e of the founding fathers of the New England Trail Riders Association, Al wa s a driving force of the Berkshire Two-Day Trial and, along with his bride Marie, was instrumental in bringi ng the International Six Day Enduro to the U.S. in 1973. Alt hou gh I me t Al and Marie m uch later, after they'd settled here in Florida, I got to know a devoted family man, mo torcycling nut, and an individualliving life to the fulles t despite the obs tacles thrown at him. Wh atever road or trail you are on now AI, put down some markers - I'll be looking for your trail. Jo n Stauffer De Land , FL Happy school boy All too 'often thes e da ys you see leiters from disgruntled cyclists who, for one reason or a nother, have b een g iven produ cts or se rvice tha t was less than promised. I am therfore happy to thank some terrific people I recently dealt with. On Saturday, April 23, I a tte nded the Team Suzuki Endurance Advanced Riding School. John Ulrich, Dave Aldana, Michael Martin, Chuck Graves and the rest of the instructors took genuine interest in helping a bunch of rookies learn the basics of racing in a safe, controlled environment. A big thank-you to a professiona l, first-ra te organization. In ad dition, l ow e even more than tha nks to Kevin Rentzell for takin g time ou t to help me wit h my lines around the race tra ck. When the back straight uncovered a high-speed wobble, both he and his mechan ic, Mack, took the time to help me try to solve the problem. I have always been an admirer of Kevin and his accomplishments, but n ow . : after seeing what a true spo~tsman he is - I will alw ays be a big fan . Lots of racers go fast a nd w in, bu t it takes a tr ue champion to slow down and take time to help out a new racer. Thanks to all, and I look forward to seeing you all at my next race and I wish you continued success. Stan Simm erson Raleigh, NC Lellers to the editor should be sent to Voices, Cycle News, P.O.
