one of the later gas stops today, because
the bike was pinging badly during the
final m otocross," said Smi th . "1 kn ew
that I didn't have to bea t Ty for the
overall win, so I just let him go , and
saved the bike. At that point, all I was
concerned about was Danny (Hamel).
He finis hed qui te a ways behind me in
the final moto. I don 't think he was able
to make up enough time during the day
to catch me." Hamel finis hed the event
40 seconds behind Smith.
In winning, Smith had won six of the
Qualifier's nine special tes ts, while
Davis won two, including a four-second
v i ctory over Smith in the final MX .
Hamel set the benchmark during Saturday's firs t terrain test.
. "1 got a slow start this year, finishing
.second behind Hawkins in the series
opener," sai d Smi th . "Things didn't go
my way in Texa s, either, when I"go t
caught in a secret check .and placed
eighth. I had the flu when I rode Minden (Nevada) last month, and finished
third. Luckily, Randy (Hawkins) didn't
overall those events." Smi th now enjoys
an eight-point lead over Hawkins midway throug h the eight-event series. Each
rider will be allowed to throw out his
worst two scores.
Though Hawkins was a ways back in
the overall standings, he d id manage to
w in the Lightweight class (0-125cc),
besting Kelby Pepper by. 60 seconds.
Hawkins' chances at the overall were
limited, due mainly to a lack of power in
comparison to the bigger bikes. "The
special tests h ere were very technical
and \'ery long," said Hawkins. "These
125s just don't have the power to keep
u p with th e 250 s under those condi-
tions."
"Th e ridi ng was really tough," said
P epper. "It w as reall y phys ically
demanding, so mething we normally
find only in the Nationa l Enduro Series.
Fortuna tely, they gave us eno ugh time
to make it to each chec k. A couple of
ti mes I got ca ught up in some bottlenecks, but was able to make it without
los in g any p oints ." Peppe r finished
eighth overall.
"R iding w it h Rodne y was kin d of
fun , b ecause if he did n ' t take a n y
chances on the trail, then neither did I,"
said Davis. "We still pushed each other
so we wouldn't be late for any of th e
checks. Rodney was riding reall y good,
and just didn't make an y mistakes in his
tests. I got caught up in traffic in a test
and Rod ney took a bigger lead, so I had
made up my mind to just hold onto second."
Finishing third overa ll a n d in the
Heavyweight class (126cc and up) w as
Davide Trolli. The Italian ran ou t of fuel
on Day Two, and rec eived h elp from
Team Green cohort Dana Van Stee. "If it
wasn' t for Dan a, I wouldn't be here,"
said Trolli . "1 am very glad for his help.
These.events are difficu lt for me. They
are nothing like the World (En d uro)
Championships . These special tests are
very tight. Here, you must w ear handguards, and if you catch a rider on a
special test, you have a hard time pass ing. In Europe, the trail s are wide and
you rarely ha ve prob lems pas sing in a
test. I'm happy with my results today,
but I think this is tough for on e of yo ur
enduros. The las t sections were very d ifficult ."
Dan Harte and Brad Turnridge took
firs t and second, resp ectiv ely, in the
Heavyweight Four-Stroke class (351cc
a n d up), cap it al iztngon a Da y- Two
injury to Scott Summer s. In th e Lig htweight Four-Stroke d ivi sion (0-350cc),
KTM's Jeff Russell finished 10th ov erall.'
beating Patrick Garrahan and Larry
Ro e seler - both of w hom w ere o n
Kawasaki KLX250s that were bored out
to approximately 292cc. Dirt Rider magazine editor T o m Webb topped the
Senior class on a Husaberg, bettering
Lyle Duronso and Dick Burleson.
