Asher GRATIAN,MI,MAY7-8 ince oil and water don't mix, the top stars from the WERA National Endurance Series were never really given the opportunity to strut their stuff at Grattan Raceway . In a race th at w as re d flagged for oil twice - the first stoppage lasting nearly three and a half hours Team Suz uki Endurance prevailed for the overall win, showing once again that preparation and depth always pa yoff. Team Suzuki Endurance's Michael Martin hinted that had it not ra ined throughout the day, this would have been a totally different race. Race day started with all teams scrambling to change tires and strategies due to quickly deteriorating weather conditions. Team Suzuki Endurance's Martin quickly took the lead on lap one with Virginia Breeze Racing rid ing in his wake. R.A Racing's Tim Ruhl, coming from row nine in the first wave, held on to third after dispatching TKO Racing, while second-wave starter Ohio Superbike Racing's Dean Hayes finally became comfortable enough with the wet conditions to begin an aggressive attack and threaten third place. TKO settled into fou rth place, while West Michigan Sport Bike Club's Shawn Scholten, getting the holeshot from row 21 in the second wave, fought with four other teams to gain fifth by the middle of the first hour. To everyone's surprise, Hayes took over the lead with min utes left to go in the first hour, after hounding Ruhl and Martin. But his lead was a brief one - the first hour was cut short when the ra ce was red flagged afte r only 52 minutes due to a half-mile-long oil spill from the "Bowl" to the "Hairpin." The track crew began a three-hour assault on the spilled oil that included the use of a fire truck and several volunteers. WERA Race Director Jim Sublet called an emergency practice/riders S meeting and the teams voted to continue the race at around 4:00 p.m. Having lost thei r momentum, the riders regrouped, with most of the teams deciding to send out their first rider again for what was now the fifth hour. The restart saw Team Suzuki and Cycle Motion Racing/Team Prudential's Dave Deveau locked in a battle, with Deveau crashing out in the esses early on. Meanwhile, Ohio Superbike and R.A. Racing began a wet sprin t for second place with Ohio Superbike prevailing. Martin, on Team Suzuki End urance's " N u m ber One" bike w as tr ying to decide just how far he would be able to push the limit on the wet track. Martin , on an 1100, was well awa re of Ohio Superbike's 600 breath ing down his neck. Less than 30 minutes into the fifth hour, the race was red flagged for the second and final time, handing Team Suzuki Endurance the overa ll win for the day by a scant seven seconds over Ohio Superbike Racing. R.A. Racing held on to th ird place with TKO Racing finishing fourth. West Michigan Sport Bike proved to be the winningest team on the da y, finishing fifth overall, third in Middleweight Superbike, and first in Middleweight Super Stock. SPRINTS Highlights from Sunday'S sprint action included a hard-fought battle in the Michelin 600cc Superstock Expert race between Rueben Frankenfield, Glenn Szarek and Tom Wilson, with Frankenfield holding on for the win, Wilson second and Szarek third. In the Michelin 750cc Superstock Expert race, WERA's fastest pros battled three ab reast for the first lap. Team Suzuki's Tray Batey; David Stanton and Steve Patterson were joined by Dunlop/ Kinko's-sponsored Tom Wilson on his Yamaha, and a race-long battle ensued. The Team Suzuki teammates quickly became competitors when Tom Wilson (Above) Rain and an ollecl race track brought a premature end to theWERA endurance race at Grattan Raceway. (Right) Michael Martin (ri ght) led Team Suzu ki Endurance to the ir third win of the young season. passed all three for the lead in the early part of the race. Patterson, racing on his home track, showed his fellow team members the fast way around Grattan's 11 turns to finish second. Batey took third and Stanton fourth, with Szarek completing the top five. Wilson went on to win the B Superbike race later in the day, nearly breaking the Grattan track record in the process. Patterson smoked fellow Team Suzuki teammate Stanton in the Michelin 1100cc Superstock Expert race with a perfect late-braking/drafting move in turn one to take the overall in this National Series event. Batey placed third about 20 seconds behind the leaders. Novice Mike Desmarais continued his assault on the amateur ranks with a win in B Production, a second in Form ula 1, second in A Production and a third in B Superbike.
