"I 'm r eally, r ea l l y h appy with the win , " Rugg i a said . "For the first time this year, m y bike w as running r eally well. I took the lead easil y enough early on, but at midrace m y tires sta rted sliding and I preferred to slow rather than r isk a fall and spoil m y title chance. I w oul d 've b een h appy w ith second o r third." Sec ond w as the spo t tha t Romboni w oul d h ave to settle for after his rear tire went off at midrace, then his front began to go with five laps to run. "Halfway through the r ace, everybody started to ha ve problems with the r ear tire," the 25-year-old Italian sai d . "In my case, five laps from the end the front tire started to slide as well. When I · tried to attack [ean-Philippe Ruggia in the last lap, I had a nasty slide and had to settle for second . But with all the setup problems we overcame so far, I 'm very happy with the result." Okada, like the others, wasn't immune from fading tires, though he uses Michelins while the top two race on Dunlops. Okada said that his tires went off halfway into the race and he was content wi th third, a gift, he realized, due to the bad luck of Capirossi and Ruggia. It was his bad luck, however, to suffer a drop to fourth at the hands of an incompetent official, in this case, the lap counter. Waldmann would move into third, his first podium in his rookie season of 250cc cla ss racing. The 27-yearold German said that when Romboni had a big slide on what would be the last lap, he was forced to back off which allowed Okada to close up and pass him on the uncounted 26th lap. Aoki wa s better than six seconds behind the top four, and better than 22 in front of the fight for si xth. It would come down to D' Antin beating Bayle and Harada, all on the same second, with Zeelenberg another half a second behind . Mohag Aprilia's Eskil Suter completed the top 10. QII ·B ·efl . · l· 'r .. Kazuto sakata won the 125cc Grand Prix with relative ease, beat ing Germ an Peter Cetll by 6.802 seconds.
