(Laft) For the second supercross round In a row, (left to right)

winner Hughes (22).
had quickly worked his way up through
the pack after getting left behind in the
firs t tum. At one point, Henry passed
Emig for sixth, but Emig retaliated a lap
later. Emig held Henry off and eventually finished sixth .
"I just d idn't feel real strong tonight,"
said Emig. "I s t a r te d getting sick on
Wednesday and started taking cold
medicine. After the seco n d lap 1 was
huffin' and puffin'."
After battling back and fourth, Henry
settled in behind Emig for seventh.
In his first 250cc race since the 125cc
East Coast finale at Dallas, Button rode
to a hard-earned eighth, just ahead of
Kehoe and Brooks.

Craig Decker, who had earlier won
his heat race, maintained that momentum into the IS-lap 12Scc West Coast
feature, a s he powered his Honda of
Troy CRl25 into the early lead ahead of
Ryan Hughes and Yamaha rider Ray
Crumb.
Corning out of the gate midpack was
series points leader Damon Huffman,
who wasted no time working his way
up through the field, often passing riders two and three at a time. " I thought 1
had a good start, but I got stuck in the
first tum - there were so many guys,"
said Huffman.
By the third la p, he had alread y
climbed into third after passing Crumb.
"I knew 1 had to pass a lot of peoplequick!" sa id Huffman.
Unfortunately for Huffman, however, by the time he had control of third,
both DeCKer and Hughes were long
gone, engaged in a serious dogfight for
the lead.
Decker held his ground until the fifth
lap when Hughes double-jumped by the
Honda rider, but Decker stayed close to
the new leader and matched the
Kawasaki rider's ev ery move.
Meanwhile, Huffman, in third, was
slowly closing in on the duo as the leaders began negotiating their way around
lapped rid ers.

the track after "hitting neutral" through a

whether or not Hughes could h old off
the h ard-charging Huffman. Hughes
and Hu ffman took the white flag in
quick su ccession, and a few turns later
Huffman nearly passed Hughes, but th e
Kawasaki rider blocked his line through
a tum. Huffman tried again a straightaway later, only to slide out with the
throttle pinned w ide open.
.
Things got a little confusing at this
point when Hughes, who was expecting
to see the checkered flag, saw the white
flag - again! However, the race was
deemed officially over at this point and
Hughes had recorded his second win of
the season.
"I knew he (Huffman) was corning,
but 1 knew I could hold him off," sa id a
ver y happy Hughes. "I pushed hard,
and when I saw the white flag for the
secon d time, I thought, 'Another lap!?

" I have to dedicate this w in to m y

"I tried everything to get around him
(H u ghes)," said Huffman of the last lap.
"The track was kind of loose in places, I
drifted wide and lost it . 1 d id a oneeighty - that was kind of cool. 1 just
pushed it a little too hard."
After his off-track excursion, Decker
m anaged to salvage third by passing
Gonzalez, who end ed up fourth. James
Dobb, of the 5pIitfire /Pro C i rcu it/
Kawasaki team, finished a remarkable
fifth after rounding the first lap in 20th
place. Michael Brandes, on an FMFbacked Kawasaki, finished sixth after
starting the race in fourth, while Tony
Graves, C rumb and Lowell Moural
rounded out the top 10.
