(Right) Kevin Norton showed up at EI Trail aboard . a shiny new Gas-Gas, but thanks to th is sp ill , th e bike had no rear fender at the day's end. National Champion Olivier Clamigirand carded cleans, while the others struggled to make it through without crashing. Section two was sponso red by Power All, and featured another rock garden. This time, however, the rocks were sharp and had points . As they were in the first section, Codina and Clamagirand were the class of the field, though th is time they were joined in their clean rides by Lonny Halstead of Port1and,Orego~ . Halstead, who made the long drive to California solo, was prominently featured in a Thursday night channel 9 newscast, which highlighted the event. The Montesa USA-sponsored fourth section was a massive ordeal of uphill climbs and jumps off slabs of dry rock. Again , m ost riders d id their magic, though with much less success, to the cheers of the appreciative crowd. It was in this section that Laguna Beach, California's Kevin Norton looped out on his Axo Sport-sponsored Gas-Gas on a particularly nast y fiv e-foo t ledge and rip ped the rear fend er off of his brand n e w b ike . The e n th usias tic ga llery cheered, even as the y ran to avo id the fallin g motorcycle. At the day's end, Cod ina emerged as the clear winn er, besting h is nea rest rival, Clamagirand, by five dabs, 8-13. Codina boasted 13 clean rides, O amagirand had 12. Clearly, the Eu ropean riding sty les exhibited by Codina and Clamagirand showed w hy the rid ers from the continent shine in the d ifficult World Round competitions. With their abilities to hop, bounc e and finesse their mounts - while the Ame rica n rid ers frequently try to muscl e their way through; o ver or around ob stacles - the Europeans are head and shoulders above their U.S. counterparts. Finishing a respectable third was Moreland, New York's Raymond Peters, with nine cleans and 21 points. Peters ranks third in the U.S. standings and is a three-time member of the U.S. Trails des Nations team. His attendance from the East Coast indicated the prominence that E1 Trial de Espana has risen to. Other credible placings and rides S PT SMN B: 1. Wayne Anders ( Fa n) : 2. Keith Oakley (Yam): 3.
