The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently presented the 1993 national volunteer group award to the Mot orcycle Industry Cou ncil (MIC) for their efforts to improve and build trails in two national forests in Georgia. Agriculture forest chief Jack Ward Thomas commended the MIC for its leadership in bringing together many Forest Service public and private partners interested in community service for the outdoors. Former World 250cc MX Champion and Baja winner Da nny LaPorte and multitime Italian Enduro Champion .Davide Trolli will team up on an FMF-backed Kawasaki for the Baja 500 on June 4. Warner Rile y, a 16-time Bonneville record holder and 200 mph club member, suffered a separa ted shoulder and a fracture/ dislocation of his thumb while trail riding recently. G a ry Nixo n, D i ck M a n n and D i ck Klamfoth will take part in AHRMA's May 21-22 race at Grattan Raceway Park in Grattan, Michigan. Both road and motocross races, as well as a trial will be held . Mann will compete in both the MX and the trial, while join ing Nixon and Klamfoth in paced laps around Grattan's road-race circuit. First is the new.try-before-you-buy policy which allows racers with licenses from other organizations to race at one AHRMA SoS/BoT event without joining AHRMA. The events are AMA-sanctioned so all riders may be 'AMA members. Secondly, AHRMA has lowered the entry fees to $50 for the first class, $40 for the second entry and $30 apiece for three or more entries, After many years of holding only technical seminars at Budds Creek in Maryland, the Tony D. Canada's Performance Racing News has selected Steve Crevier as its Motorcycle Road Racer of the Year in the second annual readers' choice awards. Crevier won his fourth Canadian National Championship last year. Crevier edged out Miguel DuH amel. For the third consecutive year, American H onda Mot or Company is sponsoring the CBR Challenge Series for Pro-A m road racers. Those competing on 1993 and 1994 .Honda CBR600 and CBR900 motorcycles are eligible to win $114,000 in award certificates at 61 regional races during the year. A championship fin al has been scheduled for Daytona InternationalSpeedway in October which will add another $30,000 in cash awards to the program. Cycle News contributor Alan Cath cart has been cleaning up thus far in Sound of Singles racing. Cathcart won both races at Putnam Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 17, and he also won two races at the Bathurst IT at Mount Panorama in Australia. The event - round eight of the AMA's Grand National Cross Country Series was threatented recently when the Monongahela Power Company, which owns the land the race was formerly held on, reversed a long-standing policy and barred all wheeled vehi cle traffic on the land. As a result, the 20th Annual Blackwater 100 will be held on an all-new course at the Timberline Ski Resort near Davis, West Virginia, and will utilize ski slopes and other areas of the resort. • As in the past, ATV races will take place on Saturday and motorcycle races will run on Sunday. For more information , call Racer Productions at 304/594-1157 or fax 304/594-1991. - California Desert Bill clears House anel Deser: A committee of the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to approve H,R. 518, the controversial California Protection Act, setting up a showdown over the bill on the House floor, according to the AMA. . The vote in the House Natural Resources Committee was split along party lines, with all 28 Democratic committee members voting to send the bill to the House floor and 14 of the 15 Republicans voting against passage. Most of the votes were cast by proxy, rather than in person by the elected officials. Prior to the vote, Committee Chairman George Miller (D-California) successfully modified the bill to preserve off-road riding opportunities in the 61,630-acre South Algodones Dunes area east of San Diego, California . However, the bill would still lock motorcyclists out of millions of acres of public lan d in the Southern California desert. . , An amm endment to preserve additional riding areas was offered by bill sponsor Rep . Rick Lehman (D-California) on behalf of the AMA, but it failed 17-23 after Miller and Rep. Bruce Vento (D-Minnesota) spoke in opposition to the proposal. The Lehman amendment was similar to compromise language included in S.21, the Senate version of the California Desert Protection Act, that passed in mid-April. The bill now moves to the Ho use floor where passage is cons idered likely . If H.R. 518 passes the House as currently drafted, differences between the House and Senate measures will .J:e ~onci1ed in a joint House/Senate conference committee. The AMA opposes H .R. 518 in its present form and is urging adoption of the Lehman amendment during the conference committee process. The AMA is encouranging any one interested in balanced management of public lands to write letters in favo r of the Lehman amendment to Rep . The qualifyi ng schedule for the AMA Loretta Lynn MX National has changed in regards to the South Central Region. Th e track sched uled to hold an area qu alifier and the regional is no longer in business. Thunder Mountain Motoplex in Rusk, Texas, will hold the last South Central qualifier on Saturday, May 14.
