Hangtown Motocross Classic, held at th e Prairie City OHV Area . Kal os' win came not in the Na tional Motocross, however, but in his debut ride in the Cellular One Sound of Thunder Four-Stroke Series. Mounted on a Husaberg FC, Kalos turned in a powerful second-moto win to emerge victorious in the series opener. "1 don't have much experience at all on four -stro kes," Kalos said. "I only had this bike two weeks before the first race." Mike Healey and Greg Z itterkopf shared the holeshot as the field th undered into tum one with ne ither rider gaining a clear advantage. CMClSunstar Sprockets Spring Oassie MX Series: Round 1 Walters whips 'em at Sacramento MX By John Silva SACRAMENTO, CA, APR 16 p ud Walters proved to be the "hot pota t o " at th e CM C / Su n s t a r Sprockets Spring Classic MX Series opener a t th e Prairie City OHV Park, winnin g bo th th e 12Scc and 2S0cc Pro divisions. Th e 20-yea r-old FMF /Varner Ra cin g/ Yoko / Bieffe / Smi th /Ma xim a/ Dunlop/Wo r ks C onnection/ROW Graphics/ Alpinestars-backed Walters was the crowd favorite as he entertained . th e fa ns en ro u te to four consecutive moto victories. The 250cc Pros took to the track first, but the start was marred by a first-turn p ile-up w hich forced a restart, to the consterna tion of P a tt Gomm, Sco t t Myers and Keith Mayes, who were leading be fore the red flag appeared. Yamaha p ilot Josh Boykin holeshot the restart with Mayes and Walt ers in tow. Things deteriorated for Myers, a firstlap mishap placing him at th e bac k of the pack. Walters moved p ast Mayes and set off afte r Boykin, ca tching and eventually passing him on lap three . Gornm bobbled a bit, allowing John Nelson by, but th en retook fourth after a two-l ap ba ttle. Mayes also fell victim to the determined Gornm on th e last lap. The order wa s th en se t, w ith Wa lters winning handily over Boykin, Gornm, Mayes and Nelson. Moto two was wall-to-wall Walters, as he led the firs t lap then ran unchallenged to the finish. The race w as less certain behind Walters, w ith Nelson, Me yers and Boykin battling it out. Boykin started the moto out front, but had some trouble in a comer early on. "My front wheel was caught in a rut from the track-grooming equipment. Go ing into the tum, 1 was committed S an d couldn't back off, what with th e pa ck on my heels. Swoosh, out went the front tire, and I did my best Pete Rose imita tion, sli di ng face-first:' said Boykin. Boykin was safe in the mishap and restarte d qu ickly, but while h e pounded on his handlebar in an attemp t to reposition a control lever gone askew, . Gomm slipped by. Myers seem ed to find h is stride in this moto, passing Nelson on lap two to take over se cond, then quickly setting off after Walters. Myers gave a 110% effort for the ne xt fou r laps, wringing every ounce of hor sepow er out of his Yama h a. Although Meyers ' effort was impressive, Walters had built a sizea ble lead and was ou t of reach . At the finish, it was Wa lt e rs, Meyers and Gomm, while Boykin advanced to fourth via a a last-lap pas s on Nelson. Results 250 PRO : 1. Sp u d Walter s (Su z); 2. Pat Gomm (Yam); 3.
