by Honda and Kawasaki, this unit also gives an average speed reading - perfect for enduro competition, Strangely, though, Yamaha has situated the electronic sender unit ou tboard of the countersha ft sprocket. Gea rin g cha nges ca n be acc ommod a te d by a n op tional electro nics kit. The downside is that all wheel-spin is coun ted as distance covere d , and th e m uddy enviro nment around the sprocket area may not be the best place to locate electronic equipment. Serious dirt riders w ill questi on the steel fuel tank as a retro step. For those w ith milder off-road aspira tions, th is won't be a problem. The pain t finish certainly keeps its appearance well - so long as the tank remains undented. Along with the various oth er kit parts, a plastic fuel .tank option is expected shortly. Some of the best items on our test bike were optional kit items. These included an alloy bashplate, oil cooler, and exquisitely crafted alloy bush bars, handlebars and crossbrace. Quarter-liter dual sport bikes traditionally do n't make great roadbikes for long hauls. The TfR copes better than most, however. For a start, the engine is strong on power and pulls the relatively tall top gear easily up to 140 kph without appearing to be straining. Engine counterbalancers also do a good job of smoothing out the single cylinder vibes. In traffic, the high, wide riding position gives excellent visibility and makes countersteering through traffic so easy. Street credibility is enhanced by the bright graphics and purple anodized rims - you can't be missed on the TIR. Without doubt, Yamaha's TI'R250 is a class act. It is extremely well equipped and detailed. The bike performs exceptiona1ly well for its intended use, which is to say a heavy-duty mix of rugged trails, rompetition and street riding. Practically speaking, few riders will opt for such a bizarre mix of disciplines, probably leaning more towards one or the o th er extreme. H owever, this is precisely what we imagine Yamaha stipulated in their design brief. The road rider who has the yearning for occasional off-road adventures has a bike that looks the part and will be capable of anything required. Serious riders (or those who become so in time) won't be let down by the TfR's base performance either. With knobby tires and a change of gearing, the TfR is capable of finishing any enduro - and finishingwelL With the investment of further dollars, the enthusiast can focus the TfR more closely for their own riding needs, adding (and subtracting) equipment to create an all-out racer.
