·.VO E ·:':·: IC S· America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Letters to the . ditOr: . e Come back, Damon This letter goes ou t to Damon Bradshaw. I kno w that you may be perfectly happy working with horses and we are all very happy for you . I can see how the pressure to win in this sport ma y take the fun out of it Ho wever, my friends and I are concerned tha t your retirement causes a dilemma. You see for as long as we have been going to the National at High Point (Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania...Editor), you have won it This year there may actually be a chance that someone else w~ll win. Imagine that if you can . Who will we cheer for? This is why we see no other answer to this problem - you must take a break from retirement for at least this race. We know Yamaha gave you a 1994-spec YZ, so load it up in the dually and let's have some fun at High Point again. Let's show these other guys another 30-second margin of victory - this time as a privateer! Show up and the rest will be history. Damon is still King here. Long live the King, and God bless Jeff Emig. Scott Kistner Holland,OH Kudos to WERA I was both bummed and, at the same time, relieved to read that WERA has decided to can the Pocono dates previously scheduled. Coming from the Philadelph ia area, Pocono was the biggest racing event around. It's a downer to see it go. Having raced on the ci rcuit, I'm happy to see WERA sticking to its convictions, however, after not getting the asked-for safety measures. The most disturbing fact is that, in this country, the sport has such a limited following and, hence, limited bargaining power, and that even moderate expenses in the name of rider safety (look at the AMA venues) are difficult Volume XXXI or im possibl e to im plement. Pocono Racewa y would rather see the even t die than comply with WERA' s resonable request . The whol e thing is such a vici ous circle - no media coverage, no new faces a ttending th e ra ces; sma II gate receipts , no finan cial power to get the track owner's attention; and on and on. Our illustrious Philadelp hia inquirer won' t even print GP results, much less give loca l events a ny sp ace - but you can be sure they will let you know what ballplayer was sufferin g from jock itch in last night's gam e. I guess I've been around too long to witness much improvement in this situation, but it's very frustrating to see the spor t receive second-class status and anonymity when virtually every other country in the world recognizes the mastery and grit it takes to compete at the top . And they produce the fans and the media coverage to support it. It's a sad comment when the names of elite American riders are more familiar in those countries than they are at home. Warren Smith Lincoln University, PA Remembering C.E. I first met C.E. Altma n when Pace Managem ent hired me to announce the 1975 Dallas Supercross. I wal ked into Texas Stadium and introduced m yself. CE. said: "So you're Larry Huffman . Well, let me tell you, we don't do things the same w ay Mike Good w in does ." I replied: "Well, Mr. Altman, at least we agree on one thin g." I ha d been Goodwin's ann ouncer since his first Superbowl of Motocross in 1972 CE. was one of th e mos t genuine people I ever met. He loved ~upercro~, I think, most of all . And hIS favonte rider was p robab ly Bob Hannah. I called his hosp ital r oom the day he died and spoke to his sister. She said it didn' t look good and I spen t the rest of the day remembering all the. races I'd worked for CE. - Seattle, Pontiac, Dallas , Houston, an d more. Everybody was "Neighbor" to CE. He was a hell of a man and I'm going to miss him. He 's probably sitting around right now ·w ith Ro xy Rockwood and Gaylon Mosier and lau ghing about motorcycle racing. Larry Huffman San Clemente, CA Read, read, read May I suggest to Mr. Chaves ("Voices" Issue #16, April 27) that he read Cycle News Issue #10 from March 16. It is painfully clear to anyone why "Rocket" Rex Staten was d isqualified from the San Felipe 250 . According to Dean Houlgate, SCORE's media relations representative, the team was spotted cu tting the course by SCORE vice president Sal FIsh, who was flying over the course in a helicopter. I quote: "A pparentl y, they totall y took off across country and, while doing the short-eoursing, actually physically passed two motorcycles." Fish described it as flagrant shortcou rsing. "It wasn't a jud gmen t ca ll; there was no question abou t it." End quote. Enough said. Joe Armstrong Marina del Rey, CA C.E.
