get away and stayed on his rear fende r for the next few comers until Jim Sten tz passed Ken McCann, Jon Nixon a nd also Dunlap to catch sight of Keech. This pro mpted Stentz to tum up the wick on his CRSOO. Sten tz began to reel in Keech as they bo th passed the scoring tower on the white-flag lap. Keech managed to ho ld off the hard-charging Stentz for the first moto win. Moto tw o saw another Dunlap ho Jeshot, while th is time Keech was bu ried in mid-pack with McCann, Cornell Can ter and Stentz right b eh in d th e lead er . But Keech had the fire o f desire burning brightly and quickly b roke free of the pack, then mo ved up into third on the back straightway. By the en d of the first lap, Keech was running second and closed quickly, but this time Dunlap was putting up a fight , successfully blockin g the Suzuki rider comer after corner. Keech continued to stick a wheel in on Du nlap, but the KX rider refuse d to be intimida ted and held onto the lead . Keech next tried to outpowcr Dunlap down the back straight, and ' for a brief moment was actually in the lead, but Dunlap was in possession of the fast inside line. As the pair exited "Blindman's Bend", Dunlap wa s still in the point position. Du nlap pulled off a lett er-perfect b lock pa ss when Keech powered by on the outsid e of a 180degree corner, but Keec h came back with a ven gean ce and powered by Dunlap again in the "Snake Pit." Keech took the white fla g in the lead, with Dunlap tiring and Nixon closin g the gap. Keech then had company in the form of N ixon, who chased him from the white flag to the checkered, wi th Du nla p a half-dozen bike lengths back in third. When th e res u lts were posted, it was Keech wi th a perfect 1-1 score followed by N ixon, who edged out Dunlap. Canter and McCann made the top five complete. Results P/W BEG: 1. In the Heavyweight class , Jeff Kramer got the holeshot closely followed by SamMcDonald, who quickly took the lead but couldn't shake Kra mer until a n erra nt co ntact lens fo rced Kramer to han d off the L.A. The ba ttle looked like it was going to be for second overa ll . However, after some d icin g early o n with L&L Racing, Team Excel, and K&N 's Phil McDonald, Probst Broth ers Racing 's Ma tthew Winnacker moved into second place. Winnacker finessed the co mers an d powered down the straights to widen the gap between second and th ird . The hot con test shifted to third place over all with Phil McDona ld, who was leading the Med iu mweight class, Team Excel and L&:L Racing in conten tion. McDonald prevailed, taking first in the class and third overall. Team Excel fell back to fifth after a failed attempt to pass L.A. Racing on the inside in tum seven. L.A. was then out of the race, with L&L, on a Honda 600, moving into a firm fourth place overall. At the finish, Sam McDonald (K&N II) held a 20-second lead. Graves, McDonald rail Willow Springs Road Race By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND,CA,APRlL 16-17 C huck Gra ves lo gged hi s fir st To yo ta Cup Unlimited Road Race by Bud w eiser FormulaOne victory of the 1994 season during the fourth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club racing action at Willow Springs International Racewa y. Graves' vic tory came on a day when Paul Harrell, who had won every Formula-One race at Willow Springs this season, was absent from competition in that class . Was ting no time off the line, Graves took the early race lea d on h is Valvoli ne /Suzuki-sponsored GSXR1100 and was neve r challenged d uring th e 14·lap even t. Tw o laps in to the race, Mar k Mc Do nald emerged fro m a four-ri der grou p to move into second. A lap later, Brad Ha zen moved himself in to thir d . No cha nges occured in the top three for the next eight laps. Then McDonald began to slow his pace, and as he passed his pit crew at the end of lap 10, he was pointing down at his rea r tire. Sure enough, a lap lateron the front straight, Hazen closed up ra p idl y on McDonald a nd passed h im . The . re mainder of the race saw McDonald struggle wi th deteriorating traction from his rea r lire. But h e managed to re ta in his th ird p lace spot, des pite a hard-charging pa ir of Yamaha TZ250s comin g up from behind rid den by Michael Montoya and Jaso n Paden. At the line, Graves took an easy win with Haze n second and McDonald hangin g on to finish third. The Maxi ma Racing Oil Formula-Two race was a hotly contested shootou t from the drop.of the green flag to the checkered. Jumping off the line to take the race lead was Michael Montoya followed d irectl y by Mark McDonald. Rounding tum two on the first lap, McDonald got around the inside of Montoya to take over the lead with his Yamaha TZ25O. This set the tone of the entire race as these two riders continued to battle for the lead over the next ten laps. On lap five , McDonald and Mo ntoya sud de nly had company as Jason Paden was twisting the throttle on his Yamaha TZ250 in an effort to catch the leaders . His efforts to mo ve up to the front of the pack saw Paden come very close to setting a new Form ula-Two lap time record for Willow Spri ngs . Despite his best efforts, Pad en was unable to catch McDonald and Monto ya. Star ting the fina l lap of the race, bo th rid ers were r u n ni ng s id e by s ide d own th e fr on t straight. Montoya emerged with the lead out of tum one and continued to hold the lea d un til tu m eight w here he was once again 'challenged by McDonald. Montoya held him off, but after rounding tu m nine , they were side by side once again. It was a photo finish at the line, with the victory being awarded to McDonald over Montoya, in second . APRIO Scott Wood grabbed the early 30+ class points lea d in round one of the spring po rti on of the 1994 South Florida Motocross Championship Series he ld at C lu b Mot osport MX Park. The Kawasaki-mounted Wood pulled the first-moto holeshot ah ead of Bob Kiese l, Dean Dyess and Jo hn Flynn. Defend ing Win ter Series champ Dyess was ted little time, getting around Kiesel and cha llengi ng Wood for the lead on the SO<>ond lap. Wood rode flaw lessl y, not giving an inch and holdin g off Dyess at every tum until the fourth lap . Dyess wou ld make his move on the fastest se c tion of the t rack, going d own th e long str aigh t to the little kicker jump that led to a hi gh- banked, right -hand berm. Unfortunately fo r Dyes s. this was the exact m o men t th at enough fluid had leaked from his front brake to render it useless. Needless to say, Dyess's foray into the lead was short-lived , as he took a header over the berm, ending any shot at the wi n. Wood held on to take the win, safely ahead of Kiesel and a hard-eharging John Ha uf. The second moto featured a new lead player in the person of Hauf who p ulled the holeshot ahead of Wood, Dyess and Joey StradL On the secon d lap Kiesel mo ved by Stradl , and th e Ha uf-Wood-Dyess-Kiesel frieght tra in began pulling away from the pack. Ha uf held his lead, whi le Wood and Dyess renewed their first-mo te du el. Dyess once again made his move on the fourth lap - this time with functioning brake and he got by Wood to take ove r second place, which he held till the last lap. Hauf rode a grea t race, bu t fatigue began to take its toll; on the final lap, the Dyess-Wood ba ttle dropped Hauf to third. Dyes s held off Wood to take the moto win followed by Hauf in thir d place. A happy Wood took the ove rall win. and a lO-point lead over arch rival Dyess heading into the second round of the Spring Series at Orlando MX Park. '" Results P!W (4-6) : 1. W. Molloy (Yam); 2. D.
