Megaw on top at Midway MX By George Hodk inson KELLOG, MN. APR. 10 Ryan Megaw took home the ove rall hon ors in the Mini Seni or class by posting 1-2 moto sco res at the Midway Recre ation Park, as the AMA Distri ct 23 motocross se ason kicked off for 1994. Mike Ettesvold, the class number-one p late hold er , sta rted ou t moto one wi th the h olesh ot followed by Courtney Sampson, who is new to the class after success in the Mini Junior ranks. After the first lap through the " Dirty Dozen" wh oop s ec ti o n, th e cl a s s ac tion b egan to unfold, with Mich ael Kann and Mega w m o v ing into the seco nd and third posi tions behin d Ettesv old as Sampson slipped back. The tr io of Yamaha p ilots sta yed close to each othe r for the en tire race, w ith Mega w getting by Kann on the third of four laps and setting after the lead er , Ettesvold. Megaw kept the pressure on Ettesvold and with on ly half a lap re mai ning, worked past him to tak e over the lead , while Kann held the th ird position. At the finish the order remained: Megaw, Ette svold and Kann . The second mo to proved to be jus t as close wi th Kann getting the ho leshot and Ettesvold, Me ga w , a n d Eric Gerber in tow . Kann w as re lentlessly pursued by Ettesvold, who made sev eral attempts to pass him for the lead and finally made one stick in the whoop section. Ettesvold later made a mistake whi le in the lead position tha t allowed Kann to get by for the win and Megaw for second, and ended up finishing the moto in third. Th e 25+ A class is typically one wi th good competition and this day proved to be no exception. Bill Engstrom used the power of his Honda CRSOO to shoot himself into the lead followed by Bry an Hunt, Chris Bense and Bru ce Ga tes. By lap one Engstrom had fallen back a few positions, and Hunt had moved into the lead with Bense and Gates moving into second and third, respectively. By lap two, Hunt was showing b la z in g s p eed and a lread y putting a lot of ground between himself and the field . At the finish, Bry an Hunt took a convincing ' win followed by Be n se in second . Bryan's brother, Dana Hunt, moved up to third, and Gates was ourth. Engstrom again was quickest to the first corner in the second moto wi th Bryan Hunt and Jeff Colbert behind . Hu n t quickly displaced Engstrom on the first lap, as did Colbert on the second lap . A close ba ttle for second was waged between Colbert , Ga tes and Bense as all three were determined to take the second position. As Hunt ran comfortably to the win , Colbert, Gates and Bense we re flying literally side by side over the jumps, rubbing handlebars . Bense was able to slip between Gales an d Colbert to finish the mo to in second, wi th Col bert thi rd and Gates fourth. Results MIC RO MlM: 1. Brandon Andenon; 2. John Deotis; 3. Sober Photo by Jim Thorn COSTA MESA. CA,APR. 15 It wa s a n ight for champ ions at Costa Mesa Speedwa y as 1987 U.s. Nationa l Cha m p ion Brad Oxley came from the back of the pack to win th e Ha ndicap main, w h il e t w o - tim e National champ Bobby Sch wa rtz cla imed the to p sp o t in both th e Scratch Main a nd th e Championship Challenge. In the Scratch main event, Schwartz con tinued the pattern he had set in his earlier Scratch heat and semi-final. He out-ga ted and out-rode his competition. Schwartz started the ma in on the po le with Charlie Venegas to his righ t, follo wed in order by las t w ee k ' s w in n e r Jo sh Larsen, Brad O xley and Bren t We rner. Schwartz got the best sta rt off the line but had to con ten d wi th Larsen as the pack reached th e firs t lum. Larsen had the d isad van tage of being on the ou tside and it cost him as the two lead ers came together, forcing him to stra igh ten up and thus removin g an y chance he had of coming out with a vict ory. Oxle y, com ing out of the fourth slot, dropped down to the pole qu ickly and in to second place as th e group h eaded down the back straight. Vene gas stayed righ t on Oxley's tail and Werner d id the same, tryi ng in vain to find traction on the ou tsid e line. At t he flag, Schwartz won by a co uple of b ike lengths with Oxley and Venegas in tow . Werner and a tired Josh Larsen rounded out the field in that order. In the Handicap feature, Oxley came from the 50-yard marker with lone 2O-yard er Jerry Black selling the earl y pace only to have the race restarted when 3D-yarder Ed die Castro made co ntact with Black's rear tire and en d ed u p prone on the track. Werner had no place to go and found himself using Castro's bike as a jump ramp, flying through the a ir but la n d ing unscathed. As the ra ce g ot back und erway , Black once again had the lead w ith Venegas coming from the 40 to fall in behind him. Venegas went to the outside to get around Black, but by lap four had actually los t ground an d was passed by Oxley, Schwartz and Hicks. As soon as Oxley got past Venegas, he placed his Russe ll Racing/While Bros./Gary Hicks Racing/NJK Weslake right behind the less-experienced Black, and wai ted . Oxley's patience was rewarded as Black s lid off the groove on the las t lap . Schwartz also flew past Black and in doin g so bumped him a little, causing Black to spin ou t. Oxley led Schwartz, Venegas, Rob Pfetzing and Gary Hicks across the finish line for the win. Vandeman victorious at Perris Motocross By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA,APR. 16 Sherm an Van deman smoked to a double-mot o victory in the 12Scc Beginner class during GA Super Saturday MX at Perris Raceway. Vandeman showed his speed right from the get-go by lead ing the opening lap of the first 12Scc Beginn er mot o. Gordon Keller was quick to move into second bu t was a b it suprised by a couple of girls wh o moved into the top five and beg an to challenge him for the runner-up position. Those gi rl s were Jodi Hollow and Tami Rice, w ho toge ther we re making the boys a bit nervous up at the front of the field. A s the race wore on, Van d eman opened a huge lead and went on for the moto win. Keller crashed ha rd over a tabletop and ended up a d issapo inting 12th. Th e girl s finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, wi th Hollow gelling the fourth position followed by Rice and Erin Donnelly, who was riding faster then ever. Dean Shaw and Kyle Baird battled for second right up to the finish line wi th Shaw ge tting the checkered flag first. Van deman sim p ly walked a way with th e second -moto win. Baird loo ked good all moto long for second while Keller, Shaw and Hollow ro un ded out the top five. Jerry Jetton returned from a one-year layoff to top the 25+ Ama teur class. Je tton rode wit h the same uni que form which eamed him a number of victo ries during the 1991-1992 race season, easily w inning his first mo to over.]ay Povlovec and Ken Faught But the second moto was a bit more difficult for Jetton. as he mistakenly started on the wrong gate. Jetton came from nearly a lap down to pass Faught w ith two laps to go . When the checkered flag waved , Jetton had the moto and overall victories . Pa vlo vec slipped past Faught for second.
