feature. Del-loop, on the other hand, moved on to the semis, as d id Kiedrowski who ended up sixth. McGrath led all but the second lap of the second heat race. McGrath 's Honda edged Craig's Yamaha through the first tum, but a lap later Cra ig successfully attempted a su rprise pass on McGrath through the long section of whoops. But less than a lap later, McGrath was back ou t in front. McGrath cruised the rest of the way, performing his crowd-pleasing nac-nac over the tripl es on the last lap. Craig finished a d istant second, while Stanton finished jus t ahead of teammate Doug Henry, Team Nol een /Sizzler Restaurants/Xtreme / Yamaha's Larry Ward and KTM's lone soldier Cliff Palmer, all finishing within a few feet of each other. . Kiedrowski and Matiasevich stole the show in the first of two semis, where the top five riders transfer. They quickly detached themselves from the rest of the field a nd mainta ined a steady pace throughout the eight-lap race. Matiasevich seemed content where he was and made no attempt to pass the Kawasaki rid er. Kiedrowski and Matia se vich sailed across the finish-line double jump in first and second, while Yamaha rider Mike Chamberlain, Suzuki's Denn y Stephenson an d DeHoop rounded out the top five. Larry Ward and Team Splitfire /ProCircuit-Kawasaki's Jimm y Gaddis battled back and forth early in the second semi until Ward got the upper hand and broke free from Gaddis. Ward went on to take the win while Gaddis grabbed second. Kawasaki rider Buddy Antunez claimed third just ahead of Palmer and Kawasaki rider Mike Fisher. Honda of Troy's Erik Kehoe bat tled among the leaders before crashing in the whoops. There was very little racing action up fro nt in the Las t Chance Qua lifi er, where the last two spots for the 2D-rider feature are deci de d . Keh oe and Jones emerged from the first tum in first and second place, respectively , and would cross the finish line in the exact same positions. The two factory Yamaha s ridden by Emig and Craig led the way through the first tum in the Coors Light Challenge, but it wa s Craig who he ld the po int entering th e second lap. Emig settle d into second ahead of McGrath, form er cham p Stanton, and Kiedrows ki. Lakocco was mired back in 12th place. "I got bunched up in the firs t tum and got held up," said laRocco. Other riders hav ing problems in the first tum were Chamberlain , Antunez and Jones, who got pitched off his bike and landed on another section of the track. He crawled to safety just before the pack came thundering past. Craig led for three laps before getting passed by McGrath, who had - two laps earlier - forced his wa y around Emig. Like he had done so many times this season, McGrath quickly pulled out to a modest lead and appeared to be well on the way to his ninth victory . Emig kept McGrath in sight until the ninth lap when he was passed b y Kiedrowski. At this point, Kiedrowski really didn't seem to have a chance of catching McGrath. By the 15th lap, though, the situation had changed as he closed the gap on the champ - who was showing signs of tiring in the warm and humid Texas air. McGrath was beginning to make small mistakes and the y cost him dearly as Kiedrowski closed to within whisperin g d istance of th e Honda rider. . "I could see he was getting tired and making mistakes , so I jus t kept plugging away," said Kiedrowski. High Flying Excitement!
