Greg Gibson won six of the n ine ra ces he
entered during the first round of WERA's North
Regional Championships at Grattan Racew ay
Park, serving notice that 1994 is not going to be
an easy year for his competition.
Ju st to keep things interesting. WERA
reversed the track direction for this opening
weekend, which caused confusion for Experts
and Novices. alike - yet it d idn't phase Gibson in
the slightest. In Saturday's combined Heavyweight Expert and No vice 50-miler, Gibson
instantly took the lead on his McNaughton-prepared 900cc Honda from the start, but the race
was red-flagged on the first lap . The restart saw
Gibson blast away with Shawn Scho lten right
behind. but Scholten's shift lever broke on the
third lap, forcing him to retire. Steve Kok flew
by Mark Hartwick and settled into second place
for the next 4l) m inutes, having a brief battle
with Brad Dunkel, but Gibson was already long
gone. In the waning laps, Donn Lewis worked
his way into third and sneaked by Kok in the
infamous "Grattan Bowl" to finish second, with
Kok hanging on for third place.
In a preview of Novice racing for the series,
Mike Desmorais on his Yamaha 600 won eight
straight races. beginning with this 25-lap Combined event. His only serious challenge throughout the weekend came from David DeRonne,
who finished second in this first race.
For Saturday's second 50-miler, combined
Mediumweigh t/ Lightweight Expert and
Novice, Gibson had more of a fight on h is
hands. Scholten aced the start, bu t was passed
by Gibson on the second lap and crashed in the
50 ea rly in the race. Gibson tried to run away,
while the dicing for second place quickly heated
up between Rueben Frankenfield, Sam Wardrip
and Kok . Wardrip w on th e battle and then
passed Gib son to take over first place. Whil e
Gibson held seco n d, Kok crashed, allowing
Frankenfi eld to fin ish third. Desmorais once
again finished first in the Novice ranks. .
In Sunday's 12-lap unlim ited Mi ch igan
Grand Pri x, Hartwick got the holeshot but relinquished the lead to a determined Gibson on the
first lap. While Gibson d istanced himself from
the res t of the field, And y Taft began a race-long
battle for th ird with Frankenfield. Taft won the
battle, next sellin g his sights on Hartwick, and
fina lly made his move in the "Bowl" to take over
second place behind the runaway winner, Gibson. Hartwick held on to third wi th Frankenfield
fourth. Donn Lewis had sliced through the pack
to secure fifth place, gettin g himself warmed up
for a Formula Two victory later in the day.
