Barton, Austin swap
NESC Motocross wins

During a cold , wet NE5C season opener at the
Middleboro MX facility, Brian Austin a nd Pat
Barton swapped first-and second -place pos itions
in the 125cc a n d 200ec Exp e rt cla sses, with
Austin taking the 125cc win, and Barton grabb ing the 200cc victo ry.
After Barto n's win in the first 125cc Expert
mo to, Honda rid er Austin nailed the hoJeshot in
the second moto and never looked back. Barton
was in third behind Joe MikaL
",n thr ough the
first tu m. but quickly ran him down w ithin the
first lap to take ove r second. Althou gh Barton
never los t sigh t of Austin durin g the race. he
wasn't able to make up the d istance before the
finish. Suz uki-mounted Ted D'On ofrio fInished
th ird .
In the 200cc No vice action. Yamaha rid er
Jason Hargraves grabbed the lead followed by
Bill York, on a Hond a. But Hargrav es could n't
keep up the pace fo r th e durat ion, an d York
hunted him down on the last lap for the win.
Mat t Zicaro took the holeshot in moto one of
the 125cc Youth A class, but his lead was brief.

rid er Pat Ou tericky and then Zicaro to take ove r
the lead. Shane O' Connor, on a Suz uki. quickly
moved up th rough the pack to p ut the press ure
on Ou tericky for second, making h is mov e on
t he back straig ht to ta ke po s sessi on, w h ile
Kaichen scored the w in. In moto two , Kaichen
holeshot the field and ran away with the moto to
secu re the ove rall win. O'Co nnor was in th e
hunt fo r a good o ve ra ll fini sh but crash ed ,
allowing Outericlcy to secure second place overall via 2-3 moto scores.

Jim Neese ro lled into Devil's Rid ge Motocross
and took his Te am Green/O'Nea l/Barrs

sweep of the 125 an d 2SOcc A classes, ha nd ily
wa lking away with all four wins. Neese's effort
ne tted h im a quick $600 out of the $2000 Pr o
p urse .
Bobby Stova ll was abo u t the on ly rid er to get
dose to Neese in an y of the fou r Pro motos and
fmished in the runner-up spot three out of four
times to captu re sec ond overall in both div i·
sions.
In the 250cc A class, Nees e ha m me red the
co m pe titio n in moto one . but had to earn his
pla ce on the pod ium in the second mote, as the
co mpeti tio n tigh tened u p conside ra b ly. Lee
Walston ma de 3 great return to mot ocross. after
a severe back inju ry ha d p ut h im on the sidelines, and pu lled a strong second-place start to
Neese in moto two . Walston fought off ma ny
p ass attemp ts from a host of riders tha t includ ed
Kirk Johnson , Stovall, Scott Shipley and A class
newcom er Dav id Price. The five-way battle in
this moto was the bes t of the da y, wit h Neese
agai n scorin g the win while Walsto n held on for
the ru nner-up spo t in jus t his second mot o in
two-and-a-half yea rs . Stovall fin ished third in
the moto with Johnson a nd Shipley round ing
out the top five.
Derreck Bell wa s abl e to pilot h is KX60 to
first in the 65cc (7-11) class via a 2-1 score over
Nicholas Warner. Virgina rider Stephen Grim es
too k the holsho t as mot o one got o ff the line
with Wa rn e r a nd Bell in tow . Grimes led the
first circuit before he took a spill and dropped
back out of the top five, ha ndi ng the lead to
Warner. Bell was ted little time d isp lacing Warner for the top 5pot, but Warner sho t righ t back
to re gain the lead before the en d of lap tw o.
Warner was able to hold off Bell to the flag for
the win wi th Grimes in th ird . Mota tw o wa s a
De rr eck Bell ru n a w a y , w ith Bell taki ng th e
holeshot and never looki ng back on his wa y to
the mo to wi n and the State Cha m pi on sh ip .
Grimes pu t on a ha rd charge to catch Bell, bu t
could not manage to move himself close enough
to pass and had to se ttle for seco nd over Warn er. whose first· moto win was enough to net him
second overa ll even with Grimes takin g runner·
up in moto two.

McAlister cleans up
at Hom Rapids Motocross

The sa ndy soil and high speed s of Hom Rapids
se e med to s u it th e ri d ing s ty le of Su zuk imounted Chaun McAlister just fine as he won
both the 125 and 2SOcc Pro c1a 'les a t round two
so f the Sprin g Su p e r Series MX a t the Ho rn
Rapids O RV Pa rk. Marc Henderson won the
h ighly compe tit ive 125cc B and Co mb ine d B
classes, and Mark Stadel topped the field in the
2SOcc C class.
The fi rst 125cc Pr o mo to got o ff with
Kawasa ki -mo unted Dan Ulv e n pulling the
hol eshot a nd McA lis ter sett ling in to seco nd .
U1ven d efmi tely ea rned the moto win by fendin g off the ad van ces of McAlister, who nev er
seemed more than a second behind. Moto one of
the 250cc Pro saw Ulve n goi ng d own ha rd on
the first lap, wh ich allow ed McAlister to cru ise
in for the mo ta w in w ithout mu ch of a challenge. Ulven was back and ready for the second
125cc mo to, but this t ime McAlis te r got th e
holeshot and had pulled ou t a comforta ble lead
by the time the checkered flag waved. Ulven finis hed second a nd Su zuki rid er Da vid Bailey
too k th ird .
As usual, the 125cc B class was fu ll of excitemenL Marc Hend erson got the holeshot on his
Su zuki , wh ile Em il Barber wa s ted litt le time
p lacing h is H ond a in to se co nd . The tw o
remained in this po sition until Hend erson got
off w ith jus t ove r a lap to go. Barbe r took the
win with Henderso n remoun ting in time to hold
onto second . wi th Honda-moun ted Jesse Hurst
finishing third. Moto two had Barber taking the
holesho t with He nderson. Hurst , a nd Hon damount ed Mike Finney in hot pursuit. Before the
first lap was over, Barber d rifted wide io a fast
s weep e r, op en ing the d oor for He nd erson to
take over. As the laps wore down , the flound er
ing Barber sta rted losi ng gro und to Hu rst and
Finn ey, who wer e battlin g for th ird . With a lap
to go, ano ther bobb le by Barbe r plan ted him on
the ground an d Hurst mov ed into second . By
the checkered flag, Finney pu t a move on Hu rst,
d isp lacing him to third, whi le Barber easily held
on for fourth.
The 250cc C class saw Jim Barbuscia leading
the early laps befo re fadi ng back to fourth. Alan
Dosch a nd Mar k Stadel, bot h on Hondas, finished second and third . resp ectively. but the
prevaili ng rider in th e firs t moto was Ja mes
O evela nd , who got off to a medi ocre start, then
wo rked h is wa y thro ug h the pa ck to wi n the
moto. Fourth place was the best Oeveland could
mus ter in mota two, however, and Stad el took
the w in and the ove ra ll. Dosch again took """ond, while KlM-mounted Chris Nelso o crossed
the line third.
