I Jo sh Larsen, w ho in 1993 ca me w it hi n one m(.~anical failure of winning the 21 and under World Champ ionshi p in Europe, too k t he Sc ra tc h m ai n even t w in at t he Co s ta Mesa Spee dway season opener. Anothe r vetera n of the British League, Lance King, was victorious in the eigh t-ma n, eigh t-lap Ha ndicap m ain, while An gela Ha le was dee med the winner in ' the cras h- ma rred Support class mai n. The 1994 versio n of the Scratch ma in differs fro m previo us ' years in one di stinct way. Although the duration is stil l four laps, there are now five participants rather than four linin g up across the starting tapes. Larsen drew the inside pole position, with Mike Faria, Cha rlie Venegas, Bobby Schwartz and Brad Oxley fan ned out to his righ t in the rem ainin g four starting pos itions. Before th e s tart, Bob by Sch wartz jumped th e gun an d pushed the tap es d ra wing Ve negas ahead in the process. Altho ug h it appeared that Venegas was the lone cu lprit, Schwartz was cited for the infractio n and moved back to the 10-yard li ne. (A 1994 rul e cha nge penalizes ra the r than excludes a ride r who touches the tapes.) Larsen was the first off the line and he ld a tight ins ide line with Venegas on his tail. As Venegas rounded tum one he seemed to lose his line w ith a slight bobbl e and had to straighten up to avoid running in to Larsen. ]n d oing so, Venegas saw the en tire field race by him, effectively en ding an y chan ce he had of winning the even t. Faria took qu ick advantage of the situatio n an d d rove hard after Larsen down the back stra igh t wi th Oxley right behind him. Faria kept aft er Larsen for the rema ining laps, tryi ng first the outs ide and then the ins ide, but he could not ree l in the smoot h you ng vete ran, and Larsen w on by three len gths . O xley ma in tained his position to finish a co mfo rtab le third, while fourth went to Schwartz and fifth to a dis heartened Venegas. "Man, I was su rp rised to d ra w the pol e," said Larsen. "A fter tha t, I realized I had a good sho t (at winning) and just tried to make the most ofit." Larsen ca me ba ck in th e Handica p main event and almost won again, but came up short, finis hing second to Lance King. Sta rting on the 3O-yard line next to And y Northrup and Brent Wemer l King h ad on ly to overco me 20· yard starter Jason Chis m to claim the lead, which he did by the end of lap three. Werner ran in second most of the race bu t eventua lly gave way to the press ure of Larse n on th e wa ning laps . Once past Werne r, Larsen cha rged a fter King but ran out of laps befo re he could d o any real damage. Werner finished third while fourth p lace was the prope rty of No rthrup. Robe rtson's cles. est competition cam e from Stephen Martin, who took the first-mo to win but was forced 10 drop 01:1t in moto two when his machine qu it_Robertson easily headed molo two, followed by Jason Wood, Rob Wooden, J. Joshua Sum mey racked up do uble wins in 6Sec Stock on Sat urday and 6Sec Modified on Sunday, while Jeff Gibson claimed victory in the 85cc (7-11) Stock and Modified classes, in which Summey was the runner-up. Thus continues the battle whi ch the two had waged all year in 1993. Gibson earned bra gg ing ri ghts to th e 65c c MegaSeries cha mp ions hip, wi th Summey just a few points behi nd in seco nd for the seaso n, so far.
