APR. 2·3 American Flyers racer Mike Murphy bagged the trophies and cash for his five wins at Heartland Park Topeka's Championship Cup Series opener. In Saturday's Solo GTU race, Murphy was bellered by teamate Todd Harrington while number-one plated Tom Girard set the pace in the GTO race, winning in his first ride ever a t the 2.5 mile cou rse. Sunday' s weather was cool and dry, providing much better racing. The day's opener saw Colorado racer Steve Cottrell pull a slingshot pass at the flag to edge fellow MRA racer Dennie Burke for the win and top Suzuki prize money of $500. Murphy turned the tables on Harrington in the Middleweight Superbike event, towing Harrington, Girard and Rosno across the line after si x laps of follow the leader. Murphy, on his '94 CBR600 Honda, proved faster than anyone else time and time again as he snatched top Kawasaki prize money away from Dave Rosno in both Middleweight and Heavyweight Supersport competition, dominating both races from s ta rt to fin ish. In Middleweight GP, Rosno, the local number-one plat ed rider, got a great start but was passed by Murphy before the end of the first lap. Murphy took the lead and ne ve r loo ked back, beating several of the Midwest's top riders across the line for win number four . Local rider Shane Clarke proved himself King of 400cc racing by winning both the Lightweigh t Superspor t and Superbike classes in defe nding his '93 Championships. The weekend wrapped up with the Unlimited GP race. Thirty-two machines took to the grid with each rider hoping for a share of the $1,000 in prize money. Dennie Burke led off the line with Girard and Murphy in hot pursuit By lap two, Murphy had dived past Burke on his big 1100, w ith Girard, Conrad , Clarke, and Rosno still following . Girard dogged Burke until he was able to get around on lap nine to take over second . Murphy crossed the line first and netted $250 for the win.
