Unfortunately, I won't be able to. When I set up my contract with Suzuki, I still had the rods in my legs and wasn't sure if I'd be strong enough after the surgery to ride any supercross events. As it turns out my legs are stronger than ever and I felt that I would be capable of doing well in selected supercross events. In my enthusiasm, I said that I would ride at Dallas and ·s an Jose. Unfortunately, because I wasn't sure of my strength when my contract was arranged, it doesn't include any supercross events. 50, upper management at Suzuki decided that I should ra ce only those events that are outlined in my contract off-road events and selected outdoor National MX races. Therefore, I won't be riding in any AMA Supercross events this year, but will continue to concentrate on learning the ropes of off-road racing. On the good news si de, I'm rea ll y happy in the off-road arena. The level of competition is great and all of the riders have treated me wonderfully - especially my teammates Rodney Smith, Randy Hawkins and Steve Hatch. I love rid ing the Suzuki RMX250 and wa s very proud to win my first GNCC Na tional at Ocala, Florida. In fact, the Suzuki off-road team looks great this year as each of us has won a National event. 50 look for me at the offroad Nationals, selected ou tdoo r MXs, and the ISDE. And maybe I'll be .able to return to supercross next year. Thanks to all of my friends and fans for their support. A good Guy Guy Cooper has always had the reput?tion of being one of the greatest gu ys m motocross and I had the cha nce to find out firsthand recently. It wa s the morning after th e Daytona Su p ercros s and our flight was leaving for home at 7:30 a.m. At the airport my wife was getting sicker by the minute and when it came time to board th ere was n o wa y she could fly - so I rented a car and took her to the hospital. She was d iagnosed with POSTM ASTER: Send ilddress changes to Cycle News, P.O. Especially impressive were the on-board cameras on Pascal Picotte's and Scott Russell's , machines. Keith Code was a brilliant pick for a commentator as well. How about some more Superbike Nationals live? Sooner or later, we may just put a dent into all the boring NASCAR air time. Nice Ninja When the unmistakable Team Mirage road ra cing van drove into our pits a sober reality fell upon us . We realized that one of the AMA's best was abo ut to give us a "lesson" in road racing in our season opener at our own track. What we didn't know at the time was tha t Dale Quarterley would not only prove his great talent in road racing, but he would also demonstrate his supreme character and attitude as well . The eve n t was the April 3 season opener to the AFM Sprint Series at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, California. Dale, on his privateer Muzzy Kawasaki, competed in our 750cc Superstree t and Formula Pacific money races. I . had the pleasure of competing against Dale - if you can consider being lapped on my 650cc Honda Hawk as competing. In fa ct, Dale turned lap record times while lapping over 80 percent of the field. With an unbelievable lead at the completion of the eigh t-lap race, Dale pulled into the pits and allowed the local AFM'ers to .p as s him to collect the contingency money and the c1ass points. Dale repeated this procedure in the Form ula Pacific race. At first I was perplexed by his actions, recognizing that James Doherty Beacon, NY The Nashville Network's live broadcast of the Daytona 200 is the only "live" coverage scheduledfor this yenr's AMA U.S. Superbike National Championship Series. The rest of the rounds will be teleoised by Prime Network on a delayed basis. The March 13 running of the Phoenix International Raceway round, for example, will air on April 21 and the April 10 round at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, California, is scheduled to air on May 5. The World Championship Superbike Series will also be shown on Prime Network this year, beginning with the second round in Hockenheim, Germany - that race will air on May 19, one week after the event. Yet, after reflecting on his comments d uring the awardsceremony, it was quite clear tha t this was un unselfish gesture of true spo rtsmanship at the highest level. I never had the chance to express my feelings and to personally thank him for what he showed us all, but I know tha t I speak for the majority of the AFM racers and fans when I say that he won the respect and admiration of an entire club and racing community with his actions. Dale not only showed us his grea t talent on the course, but demonstrated that he is a class act as well. Good luck in the AMA series and in all of your ventures, Dale. See S.R.O food poisoning, was treated and released that afternoon. Since the .rider that I help sponsor, Chad Pederson, had already left with my motorhome, I was out looking for a hotel room with 500,000 people still in Daytona. Standing in line next to me at th e seventh hotel that I had gone to was Guy, who was checking ou t a day early. I asked the lady at the desk if I could rent that room and she said no because there was a long waiting list. I told her of our day, but she said it didn't matter if my wife was sick - I wasn't going to stay there. That's when Guy approached the desk and asked her if Suzuki still had to pay for the room even though he was leaving. She told him yes - that's when Guy picked the key off the counter and . told the lady he'd changedhis mind and was going to stay another night. He then turned and gave me the key . To say that Guy Cooper was our saviour would be an understatement. Guy, thank you for everything that you did for us and for th e world of motocross. You will always be remembered as one of the greatest - on and off the track!
