(Below) Fred Andrews lost the lead less than one mile from the checkered flag. ·B....Iy".'. . · 'r le ·..' ' ' . : 'f' admitted Smith, "1 told myself, ' Hey, you gave it your be st sh ot but it just d idn't work out: I still kept my pace up and then Fred got stuck on a hill and I . was ba ck up in second." Andrews wa s making a sh ort uphill climb when he became en tan gled with a struggling lapper . It opened the door for both Plessinger and Smith to motor by, and dropped Andre w s from o verall contention. " 1 only had two m ore hills left to cl imb fo r the finish line and I w o u ld have won," said the defending GNCC champ of his mistak e. "1 feel like I gave this ra ce away, just like I did at the opener in Florida when my brakes went away." Andrews' misfortune, combined with Smith's earlier cra sh, should hav e been a race-clinching gift for Plessinger. " Rodney w a s winning b ut he cras hed right in front of me with two mil es to go ," said Plessinger. "1 had to stop to ge t around him. Then I p ushed it pretty ha rd until I started to run out of gas: ' Due to the wet and muddy conditions, Plessinger had to slow considerably to find an d work the pe tcock of his tank , to swit~ to reserve. Th at provi ded the opening Smith neede d to get close enoug h for one last rush for the wi n. He took his sho t in the last comer, trigger in g the colli sion a n d ensuing scramble that settled this race once and for all. "1 don't kn ow if Rodney's bike was on m e or just Rodney w as on me," said Plessinger. "I got back up fast and I had to push Rodney over, out of the way. I picked my bike up but I kn ew it wasn't going to start. I don't kn ow if he ripped the ga s line off when he ran into m e or w hat, but as' soon ashe rammed me it d ied." Plessin ger pushed as fast as he could but Smith w as able to refire his Suzuki and blast ove r the last few feet of the course to take th e checkered fla g first.
