Tecate 250 KEnduro vis snaps L.H.'s streak By Chris Jonnum Photos by Tommy Thrailkill a TFSTERAZO, B.C., MEXICO,MAR 26 I n e da y before the Tecate Enduro Larry Roeseler hosted a clinic for riders interested in honing the ir riding skills. And if anyone was silly enough to question the off-road legend 's ability as an instructor - those doubts were com pletely erased one da y later. Did L.R. continue his Tecate dominance with yet another victory at the infamous event? No, riding a Kawasaki KLX250 four-stroke, he finished a respectabl e sixth overall, but the rider who did win was Roe seler' s number-one pupil, Kawasaki Team Green cohort Ty Davis. Da vis may not ha ve been a stud en t in Roes eler 's Frid ay class, but it's a wellknown fact that he's been gettingrprivate lessons." Judging by his performance in the Tecate, Roeseler must be a very good teacher, indeed. "1almost got Larry last year but I got a flat:" said the Team Green/Fox/ShOO/ FMF/ Smith/ Acerbis/C Ti/Foes Fab /Endura /LR Racing /Color Crazy / Dunlop / Kevco Stubbs/Maxima/Multi Air /C R Racing/ Braking/Pro Taper / Tsubaki/Scotts/ BLT/MMF-sponsored Davis. "He was a little bummed, but he's really cool about it. We don't get mad when the other guy wins or anything. " Last year's event was the most brutal in ye a rs, but the hosting Los Ancianos M/C decided to ease up a bit for '94. The trails were as tiring as ever, but a liberal use of resets kept the riders from carrying points. Rain soaked (Above) Ty Davis scored his first Tecate Enduro win with plenty of room to spare. His closest rivai was 11 points off his pace. (Left) Davlde Trolli (314) and Danny Hamel (313) enter a loop-three checkpoint. The two rode most of the 125-mlle-trall th is lar apart, and had only a one-second differential In the ir scores. (Below left ) Larry Roeseier ran out 01 luel, but stili finished sixth overa ll aboard a KLX250. (Below) Riding a DR350, Guy Cooper won the Open div is ion and was eighth overall. the course in the day s leading up to the event, but the sun emerged on race day, leaving awesome conditions and no dust. Despite the recent Colosio assassination and the fact that a National Enduro was being held the same weekend, attendance was only five riders down from last year, with 141 participants on hand. Even with the changes, no one was heard complaining about the ride being too "easy: ' and only 72 riders comp leted all three loops (Seniors and Super Seniors had the option of quitting after two loops). At the end of the first loop, Davis had dropped a total of four points, the same as N a ti onal Ha re & Hound Ch am p ion Da nny Hamel, Italian off-road her o David e Trolli an d Dana Van Stee. Trolli was competing in his first-ever Americanrules enduro, and was riding on the same minute as Hamel On loop two, Davis began to dominate, dropping just three points, compared to the next-elosest score of eight turned in by Past Tecate winners 1973 Bill Menchen Husqvama 1974 Bob Steffan Bultaco 1975 Ron Bishop Rokon 1976 Ron Bishop Rokon 1977 Malcolm Smith Husqvama 1978 [ack johnson Husqvama 1979 Bob Brooks Suzuki 1980 Robert Popiel Husqvama 1981 Robert Popiel Husqvama 1982 Chip Howell Yamaha 1983" Rick Johnson Yamaha 1984 Larry Roeseler Husqvama 1985 No Enduro 1986 Dave Bertram Husqva ma 1987 Randy Hawkins Husqvama 1988 Kevin Hines KTM 1989 Larry Roeseler Kawasaki 1990 Larry Roeseler Kawasaki 1991 No Endu ro 1992 Larry Roeseler Kawasaki 1993 Larry Roeseler Kawasaki 1994 Ty Davis Kawasaki "Grand Prix
