Trailing Terry Baker by two points after the first loop, Thompson b uckled down to take a three-point lead ove r Baker and Ron Cavataio, who were tied after the second loop . Thompson went on to score an Il-point final loop , taking the win 32-37. Over 75 riders were gree ted by a treacherous seven-mile loop and 10 cha llenging sections, utilizi ng rocks, m ud and s trea ms. Belgian rider Oliver Clama giran d rode his Section One-sponso red Fantic K-Roo to a convincing wi n over .Jared Malmquist in the Expert class.
