Brown bags it! By Barbara Willia ms Photos by Loren Williams BLOUN1VILLE, TN, MAR 13 ike Brown, who considers Muddy Creek Raceway his home track, drove all night afte r placing fifth in the l25cc Pro class at the Daytona Supercross to get to Muddy Creek in time to race on Sunday. It paid off, as Brown swept all four motos in the 125 and 250cc A classes during the opening round of the 1994 Pizza Plus Southeastern Regional MX Championsh ip MegaSeries, which set another record for entries. This Dunlop Day blowout drew 803 riders from 17 states and Canada to race on the renowned Muddy Creek course for a chance at Dunlop MX tires for a class win. Though the weather was overcast and cold, with the threat of rain, the air was thick with anticipation. "This makes the sixth year in a row that has shown a significant increase," said Victory Sports promoter Sam Gammon. "In 1989 we had 188 riders, so we 've come a long wa ys in a short time ." M 250cc Shane Berryhill, relatively new to Aclass racing, holeshot the first 250cc A moto and led for over a lap on the 1.3mile course before Brown took command. For four of the six laps, Berryhill hung on to battle with a hard-eharging Mike Andrews for second place. On lap five , just as Kevin Walker and Ohio's Brad Strunk caught up with him, Berryhill fa d ed quickly , fini sh in g n inth. Berryhill's second-moto start in fourth place deteriorated to 11th at the finish, for ninth overall . Kevin Walker clawed his way up from a seventh-place start in th e first moto to finish third behind Brown and Mike Andrews. A terri fic second-moto start put Walker right on Brown 's fender. Wa lker 's secon d -place fini sh to Brown gave him second overall in the class. Andrews is out for blood th is year, campaigning Suzukis in both the 125 and 250cc classes . He earned third overall in the 250cc A class. The 250cc B action saw Mitchell Hodges and Danny Haynes trad e moto wins . Haynes' second moto victo ry wasn' t enough to overcome his firstmoto crash, leaving Hodges the overall winner by virtue of his 1-2 moto placings . Hodges was followed in the over all standings by Jimmy Briggs, Tilden Styron, Stacey Barnett and Brian Thornburg. . 125cc Matt Maximoff, another newc omer to the A ranks, surprised Brown by grabbing the first-moto holeshot in the 12Sec A class. Brown answered the challenge by leaping past Maximoff down Muddy Creek's tricky stairsteps. While Brown danced away out in front, Maximoff was . occupied with fending off fellow Michigander Greg Bowen. Maxim off's defensive riding slowed him just enough to pull him within reach of a ra p id ly advancing pack that in clud ed Jim Chester, Greg Ra nd , Wal ke r and Andrews. Mounted on an unfamiliar Yamaha instead of th e Suzu ki he wa s used to, Maximoff fell uncerem oniu sly to seventh. Bowen stayed ahead of the pack to finish second foll ow ed by Chester, Walker and Rand . Brown was at the front again in the second moto and proceeded to check out. Bowen finished second once again, for second overall, in a relatively uneventful race. Third off the line was roo kie A rider Sh awn Schultz, who pulled off 1993 MegaSeries championships in both the 125 and 250cc B classes. Schultz eventually fin ished in mid pack. Rand took over for Schultz in the third spot, riding hi s Suzuki smoothly to th ird overall. Chester, who fell victim to a stomach virus on the wa y home from Daytona, managed to notch fifth overall behind Walker. Fourteen-year-old Team Green rid er Robbie Horton easily out-distanced the crowded 125cc B field, turning lap times close to those of the top five A riders. With Horton out of reach, Jimmy Briggs turned in solid rides aboard his Honda to nail down the runner-up spot, fending off the challenges of Mitchell Hodges, Danny Haynes and Phillip Myers. Second-moto action produced results tha t were wildly different from the first moto. H aynes and Hodges were involved in crashes, forcing them out of the top five, while Tilden Styron recovered from his first-moto crashitis to finish third behind Horton and Briggs. Kris Swaney rebounded from a first-moto DNF to finish fourth in moto two - not good enough to even crack the top ten. The final tally in the 125cc B class showed Horton in first overall with 1-1 moto scores, followed by Briggs' 2-2 for second overall. M yers, Hodges and Ch ad And erson rounded out th e top five, respectively. Joshua Su m m e y b lasted the 65cc cl ass, lea ving Derrick Fisher second overa ll with Jeff McIntyre, Chad Hampton an d Robert Turley in the next three placings overall. £N Muddy Creek Raceway Blountville , Tennessee Results: Marc h 13, 1994 (Ro und 1 of 15) 50 (4·6 ): 1.
