gian lost his rhythm and started making
mistakes, but by then the leaders were
gone.
Next man up was Kurt Nicoll, who
had quickly ad vanced from ninth and
scorched aw ay from race-long ri va ls
Trampas Parker and Tallon Vohland. "I
was closing on Marnicq as well, but he
picked up his pace again in the closing
laps," Nicoll said.
The two Americ ans - Parker and
Vohland - also had no answer to Rob
Herring as the Brit came through from
14th. "I didn't have enough revs out of
the gate, but 1 was able to ride hard for
the whole race, even when the kickstart
retaining spring came off five laps from
the end - it (the kickstart lever) kept getting in my way," said Herring. Herring's sweeping outside pass on Parker
through the finish arena was a gem.
Vohland was less successful. Having
let the KTM rider, Parker, nip past him
early on, he had a fru strating race .
"Trampas rode a good blocking race.
Herring was really flying when he came
past us," said Vohland.
Schmit nailed the holeshot in the second moto but couldn't pull clear of the
pack. "They might have caught me, but
they would still have to pass," said
Schmit. "Someone showed me his front
wheel once - 1 guess it was Albertyn an d he unsettled me a bit because 1
started changing my lines, but he never
came again."
The South African was headed for
the overall win in second place, but he
couldn't hold it. "I stalled. 1 was riding
badly. 1 didn't deserve to win today,"
said Albertyn, who had also been
involved in the most significant incident
of the race. "Stefan tried to stuff me, but
he went down. 1 saw him still there the
next lap."
"I tried to go under Greg, but fell,"
explained Everts. "The motor stalled in
the crash , but 1 wa s quickly back on my
feet. 1couldn't believe it when 1saw that
the kick-star t (lever) was off."
Demaria wa s again the happy runner-up, after a race-long see-saw battle
with Andrea Bartolini. Parker advanced
well out of the pack to fifth, pass ing
Michele Fanton after 20 minutes, while
Herring came from another poor start,
which had left him 13th after a lap, to
finish seventh.
Vohland had quit early after tw o
crashes in rapid succession. " I was
down in 19th already when 1 crashed
the second time. The bars were bent and
1 was shook up a little so it was best to
stop ."
Bervoets had also gone down, on lap
one, and could only salvage a 16th place
by the checkered flag.
