Liles was set to ride a Husaberg four-stroke motorcycle befor e the Vertemati brothers had a falling out with the Hu saber g factory. "After the bro thers split with Husaberg, the y decided to build their own motorcycles," said Liles, a na tive of Geo rgia who will again be living in Belgium th is season. "They built th e engines an d frames by hand and they used aftermar ket products for wheels and suspension an d th ings like that. I tested the bike (called a Ver temati) and raced it in an int ernati onal rac e last week, but it just wasn't ready for th e World Cham p ionship s. The engine was fast an d go od, but it nee ded so me testing an d changes to ma ke it com petitive for me, and that wasn't going to happen before the first GP. I dec ided I needed to salvage this seaso n by going back to the Honda - I can 't affor d ano ther bad start." Liles added that he hopes to go back to Vertemati after the season for testing and . development of a com petitive '95 machine. "In three mon ths, the brothers went from nothin g to racing bikes wit h myself and Joel Smets," said Liles. "That's a tough task. It shows how hard they are wil ling to work." . Smets, who ro de a Vertemati-mod ified Husaberg to third place in the '93 500cc World Cha mpions hips, will stay wi th Vertem ati for '94.
