came in the second 12Scc Mod ified Intermediate moto. "We were running sand tires, but the track got dry in the back section," sai d Willoh. "My front tire washed out and I flipped a couple of times ." The crash p ut Willoh out of the running, and Georgia's Robbie Horton an d Texan Billy Akers were quick to take up the slack. The two riders raced tire-toti re until t he last la p, when Horton appeared r ead y to m ake a pass . His p lans faltered, how e ve r, when he crashed in a tum. "I knew tha t if I could get a go od start I'd be there for the win," said Ho rton . "I just made a mistake at the en d." "I fel t him hit my back wheel and then he was g one, " said Akers, who went on to win the moto and the overal l. "This feels great. This is m y firs t Amateur National Championship:' Horton remounted in time to salvage second overall in front of Chris Wheeler and Shaun Perolio, Kawa saki Team Gr een 's Ricky Carmichael showed no signs of letting up and completely dominated the mini classes. In the opening 80cc 12-13 yearold Modified moto, Carmichael pulled his usual hol eshot but then d id something competely unexpected: he fell! All was not lost for the mini sensation, however, as a red flag flew and stopped the race . A faulty starti ng gate 'w a s to blame. "I got lucky that time," said Carmichael. The restart saw Billy Payne lead the way, but he had Carmichael all over him. When Payn e entered the tree-laden ba ck sectio n , he lost control and crashed. " The ruts were real deep," said Payne. '1 cross-rutted, then high-sided:' Carmichael rode a w hee li e o ve r Payne's head to take over the lead. "I kind of ra n over him," said an apologetic Carmic hael. "I thi nk my footpeg hi t his helmet: ' Payne was uninj ured, bu t ou t of contention . Wi th an op en track ahead of .him, Carmichael raced away to an easy win. Jerry Aleman had his best rid e of the weekend and ca me home second, ba re ly holding off a hard-charging [ iri Dostal. Travis Elliott rode an uneventful race for fourth, followed by Lobito Fonseca from Costa Rica. Usual top contender Jacob Martin started th e moto poorly and spent th e entire race trying to find a line around Tyler Evans. Martin and Evans collided on the final lap w hen Ma rtin tried to stuff his wa y under Evans. "I got a bad start and time was ru nning out:' said Martin. "Evans was cutting me off everywhere, so I tried to pass him on an inside line and we both went down." Evans was a bit upset about the pass a tt em p t, but calmed down in time. "I was mad at first, but then I thought that I would have probably done the same thing if it were me: ' Carmichael was untouchable in the second moto, turning in lap times that were within three seconds of Windham's winning 12Sec Expert dass times. Martin found redemption and finished second, while Dostal came home in third. Fonseca was again fourth, while Travis Riley and Aleman rounded out the top six. Carmichael also topped Dostal and Martin in the 80cc 12-13 year-old Stock class . Carmichael completed his awesome six-mote sweep by turning in a pair of hands-down moto wins in the 80cc Open class. In that class, Carmichael faced off against the ol der and more experienced riders, but his speed pulled him through and he top ped his elders with ease. Carmichael topped Brock Sellards, Caleb Leath, Andy Harrington and Josh Tarantino in the overall standings. In the 80cc 14-16 year-old ranks , Sellards is quickly gaining the repuatation of being one of the nation's fastest racers . Sellards top ped the first 80cc 14-16 year-old Modified moto ha nds d own. After passsing early leader Doug Parsons a nd Harrington, Se llards rode away with an easy w in . Missing from action was class favorite Charley Bogard. Th e Tea m Su zu ki rider suffered a broken femu r only days prior to th e event w hile practicing at th e Whitney track. "It' s s tr ange for me to see Ch a rley out," said Sellar ds. "It 's usually me who has the bad lu ck. Maybe my luck is changing." Sellards crossed the finis h line we ll ou t of reach of Harrington, who held off Leath th rou gh the entire rac e. "Ca leb co uld ha ve parked me a do zen times, but he rod e like a gentleman:' said Harrington. Th e second m ot o saw a race-long duel between Sellards and Leath, with Sellards eventually inching away from Lea th for th e win. Harrington ran near the front in the early stages, bu t a trip over the ba rs kep t him off the podium. Josh Taran tino pulled off a last-lap pass on Danny Smith for third. Sella rd s returned for the win in th e 80cc 14-16 year-old Stock class over Smith, H a rri ngton, Jimmy Varis and Tarantino. Kristy Shealy powered to both moto wins in th e Women's class aboar d her Kawasaki Team Green machine, besting hea vy class favorite, Texan Dee Ann Wood. The IS-year-old Shealy passed fast-starter Wood an d p ulled aw ay with solid leads in both motos. Wood was fo rced to settle fo r second o ve ra ll . Tammy Slay was the next-fas tes t gi rl and finished third, while Corina Chinen and Michaela Gonzalez completed the top five. Nick Adams was the dominant force in the Pee Wee classes, with the sevenyear-old posting a four-mote sweep in the SOcc Stock and Modified classes. Adams rode an ultra-trick machine that resembled a Kawasaki KX60 not only in appearance, but in power output as well. Heavy favorite James Stewart had a day that he'd rather forget. Numerous mechanical problems kept him out of the winner's circle. Kyle Partridge and Shawn Cook finished second and third (Right) Krl sty Shea ly roosted to the win In the Women's class. (Below) Jac o b Martin (9) tried to stuff his way past Tyler Eva ns, but both ri ders ended up on the gro und. (Be low ri ght) While his co mpetitors were smashi ng and . cra shi n g, Ricky carmichael ran away with th ree mlnl·cl ass wins. behind Ad a m s in the Modified race, while Logan Williams and Cody Dickey did the sa me in the Stock di vision.
