and "Rocket Rex" had opened up a comfortable margin by the finish . In moto
two, Mark Burn ett snared the lead out of
turn one, but hit a G-out with too mu ch
speed and came off the bike in the air. "I
was stoked to be in front, but I hit the
bottom of that hill a little too fast," said
Burn ett. "1 was trying to save it in the
air, but I couldn't quite p ull it off."
Staten to ok adva ntage by again '
securing the lead and p ulling ahead to
victory.
Mounted on his trick purple-a ndgreen10<500, Staten got a strong start in
the 500cc d ivision's first moto. By th e
time the riders hit the d un e jump on the
first lap, Staten was already well ahead ,
with enough time to pull a one-bander
for the a p p recia tive crowd . The wily
veteran led th roughout the rest of th e
race, doi ng his best to keep the spec tators entertained by pe rformi ng aerial
antics on his big Kawasaki.
"Things were a little blurry ou t there,"
Staten said after the first moto. "I've got
an eye infection, and my eye was glued
shut whe n I woke up this morning. I had
to soak it just to get it open."
In order to make things a little more
even in moto two, Slaten lined his bike
u p faci ng ba ckwa rds on the start. He
was nea r the back of the pack when the
green flag dropped, bu t quickly worked
his way to the fron t and pulled away to
his fourth moto win of the day.
