Returning to Southern California after a three-year absence, Round 3 of this AMA-san ctione d National Series will truly showcase the talents of America's top two-wheeled competitors as they battle it out on the challenging specially constructed 21-mile, 13-turn road course. The history of AMA National Road Racing in Southern California actually dates back to 1976. Originally run at Riverside Racew ay, first honors were earned by Reg Pridmore. The following year Wes Cooley was the winner. Then came a hiatus until 1982, when Eddie Lawson was the man to beat. In 1983, even ts were staged a t both Riverside Raceway and Willow Springs Raceway, with Mike Baldwin winning at Riverside and Wayne Rainey taking the title at Willow. In 1984, Fred Merkel won at both tracks; sadly, his victory was the end of racing at Riverside. Racing cont inued at Willow Springs in 1985, putting Kevin Schwantz in the Winner's Circle. Again, two-wheeled racing came to a halt and it wasn't until 1990 that Willow Sp ring s hosted their final National wi th Randy Renfrow grabbing the coveted checkered flag.
