Stroud races Britten to Twins win By Donn Maeda Photos by Kinney Jones DA¥rONABEACH, FL, MARCH 7 nd rew Stroud was a bit disa ppointed when he first arri ved at Daytona International Speedway for the Battle of th e Tw ins race. The person able Kiw i h ad hoped to r ace around the entir e 3.56-mile cour se aboard the exotic Britten Daytona VlOOO motorcycle, but found that like the rest of the racers on hand for the AHRMA Historic Cup Road Race National, he would compete on a shortened, 2.75-mile course. . "I had high expectations coming to Daytona. I hoped to get the chance to break into the one m inute-SO-second bracket on the regular course," said Stroud. "I cut a 1:53.8 two years ago on the Britten, but it 's improved greatly since then." Stroud's d isappointment didn't last long, however, as his chagrin was quickly replaced with the thrill of victory. After s ta rting the IS-lap Open Tw ins race in fourth, Stroud went to w or k qu ickly and by the third lap had gained control of the point position. At the drop of the checkered, Stroud enjoyed a fivesecond -plus margin of victo ry over h is nearest riv al, and in doing so secu red the first-ever race win at Daytona for the Britten team . . The thunderous exhaust notes of the twins was a welcome sound, as the class returned to Da ytona after a one-year absenc e. After being dropped from the AMA's National Championship Road Race Series at the end of 1992, the Battle of t~e Tw ins class was suddenly without a home. In it's '94 return - this time in conjunction with the American His toric Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) National Series - the Battle of the Tw ins cla ss features five different classes, making for closer racing with greater variety. Due to time constraints, only three of the five divisions were run on Monday: the Open Twins, Formula 1 and Formula 2 classes. The Open Twins class is just what its name implies - it's A a n open, anythi ng-goes class. The Formula 1 class is ope n to basically stock ma chines, a llow ing no d isplacement or engine mod ifications. Form ula 2 is open to pushrod OH C bikes up to 1200cc, and OHC bikes up to 75Occ. When the combined three-class race got und erway, it was AHRMA regular Stephen Mathews who led the way aboard a Ducati 888. Journalist Nick Ienatsch, aboard a works Bimota Tesi Superbike, was close behind, as were Ducati-mounted Pablo Real and Stroud, aboard the number-one pink, blue and white Britten. Real took control of the race on lap two, displacing Mathews on the banking, but Stroud soon found his pace and began to close in . First he passed lenatsch, then Ma thews on e lap lat er . By th e s ta rt of the third lap, Stro ud had closed in on Real 's ta ilsection and sat po ised to mak e his move. The see mingly inevitable occurred on lap four, and Stro ud raced into the lead . Th ou g h Real d id h is best to stay in Stroud's draft, his effor ts were in va in. The Kiwi qu ickly d is ta nced himself from the re st of the field, enjoying a comfortable lead within only a few laps. Behind Stroud, Iena tsch applied continuing pressure on Ma thews before finally finding his w ay past and into third on lap four . Once past the Georgian, Ienatsch pulled awa y but was unable to reel in Real. After performing numerous wh eelies on the final two laps, Stroud raced home victorious, comfortably ahead of Real, Ienatsch and Mathews, while Japanese rider Kiyo Watanabe completed the top five finishers in the Open Twins class, at a distance. "This bike has so much power, I was very comfortable out th ere," sai d Stroud. "The bike has definitely come a long way since the last time I rode it here at Da ytona. The track was a bit slippery in places; I suspect there was a bit of oil on the track. " Seeming even more d elighted than Stroud was John Britten , designer of the Britten Daytona Vl000. "It's been a long and h ard road - six yea rs, actually. We've been here five other times without w in ni ng, " said an elated Britten. "We're thrill ed to win Daytona and get a victory in the U.S. We won the twins race at Assen, which is the main tw ins race in Eu rope. Now we've won Daytona, which is th e main race here. This (wi n n in g ) is all part of establi shing yourself as a credible designer." When asked how mu ch one of his hand-built machines would cost whe n th ey co me in to produ ct ion, Britten chuckled a nd r eplied , "Onl y about $75,000." "Andrew very well on the Britten , an d Pablo Real is very fast on his Ducati, so I'm quite pleased with my fin ish ," sai d third-placed Ienatsch. " I have to th ank the Bimota factory for allowing me this wonderful opportunity to ride such a machine." Jerry Wood, of J. Wood and Company Vintage BikeAuction fame, romped home the winner of the Formula 1 class aboard a Ducati 888. "That was great fun," said Wood, before adding, "I have to thank my wife for buying me this bike!" Malcolme Tunstall and Jeff Reeves made it a Ducati sweep of the class by goes Sound of Singles Carter whips 'em all, "Single" handedly By Donn Maeda Photos by Kinney Jones DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, MARCH 7 Ian Carter ap pears friendly enough, but after watching him decimate the entire Sound of Singles field during round two of the AHRMA Historic Cup road Race Series, one might suspect that the s tout Englishman is a bit of a bully. Not content to simply win the Senior Singl es class - open to fourstrokes up to 60lcc - Carter entered the Open Singles class as well and raced home the victor in both classes with one fell swoop. How, you ask ? . With time constraints to abide by, both classes were run on the track at the same time. The faster Open Singles class left the starting grid in the first wave, while the Senior Singles class left a few moments later. Along with international A
