VOICES ': ," ' America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Letters tothe editor:• V olume XXXI Sharon Clayton, President . Tech. Stacey Guest, GraphicArtist Amy Faught, Graphic Artist A few weeks ago my family attended the Mike Kidd Arenacross in Indianapolis, Ind iana. My so n fides a 50ccAuto and was part of the program on Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday night, one of the pro rid ers, Billy Whitley, pitted close to our trail er. After the races, Billy was at our trailer and our son sat down beside him, talked with him, and got his au tog raph. Billy, who I'm sure had better things to do, took the time to listen to my son and answer his questions . He never acted bothered by my son, but instead' acted like he was very interested in him. I wonder if Mr. Whitley realizes how much this means to a young rider. I just wanted to take a minute to thank Billy Whitley for being so nice to our son, and to let him know what a great role model he is for these young guys. I hop e that some day when his son or daughter wants a minute or an autograph from someone they look up to, that he/she gets the same response he gave our son . Good luck with your racing career, Billy Whitley. You deserve it! My hat is off to those at American Honda for choosing to enforce their cloth in g codes. H opefully other team s will follow suit and help bring a little more professionalism and uniformity to this sport. My firm (a motorsports management, marketing and consulting firm) was recently, contracted to help organize a new team, ;' which is negoti ating with a non -industry sponso r to campaign a Mickey Thompson Stadium Off-Road Ultracross team. Although I had attended several Anaheim and Los Angeles Supercross races in the late 70s, I at tended the Ana heim and San Diego Supercross events with several members of this new tea m, where for the first time I tou red the pits of a professional motocross event, I was quite surprised at the lack of uniformit y amongst the teams in attendance, particularly the factory teams. Having a d rag racing background and having spent the last 20 years around auto racing , I had expected much more from the motocross an d motorcycle industry. This is not to say I was completely disappoin ted : There were several inde pendent (non-factory) teams with w hom I was quite impressed and who have done an excellent job with their programs. The Spli t Fire / H o t Whee ls /Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki tea m , the Sizz ler / Noleen/Extreme/Yamaha team and the Honda of Troy team are three who come to mind very quickly. If the people and tea ms in this sport are going to continue to try and seek outside (non-industry) financial support as Team Honda has done, those individuals and teams need to first work at becoming teams - Professional teams. Hopefully the factories as we ll as the independents will take a good hard look at the Pro Circui t, Noleen and Honda of Troy teams and wo rk at bringing more uniformity and professionalism to their teams . Lancaster, CA Lisa Thompson Arenacross role mode l Certainly m otocross is tough and demanding, physically as well as mentally. And, of course, the you nger guys have a cer tain advantage on the track . But it's al so no secre t tha t the maturity of the older riders is an advantage also. Just look at Guy Cooper these past few years. Even die-hard Jeff Stanton, Damon Bradshaw and Jeremy McGrath fans always kept one eye on Cooper and praised eve rything he did. It is extremely important to win races, but isn't it just as importan t to win fans ? Rick Johnson is pe rhaps the bes t example of all. He has such appreciation for the sport, his fans and the gifts God gave him, that he still sta nds as the guy I want to hold up before my kids. The older riders can't gain from what the younger riders are doing, but certainly everyone can gain from what a few of the olde r riders are d oing or have done. I wish the young guys wo uld consider the level of their own maturity and make a . conscious effort to improve, jus t as Rick Johnson di d - anyone ca n see how that pays. I wish they would be careful of how they act in fron t of the ir fans and wa tch w hat th ey say to the press. I also wish Cycle News would not print their foul language word for word; my kids read this paper too . So please guys, be fast, be Cool and be nice. Be like Rick.
