Fletcher fended off the attacks of Ronn ie Jones for second. Davis led from start to finish in heat five, while Rod ney Farris piloted his Eddie Adkins-tun ed Rotax to a secondplace finish. Three-time Grand National Champion Jay Sp ringsteen finished a close third, but would return in a semi. She lt o n ' s Harley- Da v idson rider Robert Lewis led Roger Durkee home in the sixth and final heat race. SEMIS Semi action was relatively un eventfu l, w ith th e exce ption of semi three. After a number of crashes and restarts, semi three saw Bud weiser of Daytonabacked Scott Stump gr ab the hoelshot aboa rd h is M&M Racin g Ho nda and lead from start to finish . Makin g the rac e a bam-burner, how ever, was the charge put forth by Sprin gsteen. After s tar ti ng in th e middle of th e pack, Springsteen mad e the top of the groove work as he raced aroun d the outside of his competitors, on e by on e, un til he wa s in second. The crowd stood on its feet in anticipation as Springsteen reeled Stump in, bu t it was too little, too late, and Stump raced across the finish with a few inches to spare. Hall 's Harley- Davidson's Ted Taylor topped the firs t se mi, w hile veteran Charlie Orr raced ho me the vic tor in semi two. Penn State Cycles rider Mike Varnes topped the final semi and completed the 16-rider main event field. NATIONAL The 25-lap main event was delayed a few moments as King raced away from the sta rting area to have tune r Geor ge Garvis fill his Hond a with gas. When the light flashed green, it was outside pole si tter Davis who led th e charge into tum one. Carr, Hill, Farris, Lewis and Poovey gave chase, Davis and Carr opened up an immediate lead over third-placed Hill, and the race was on. " I knew it was Chris behind me ," said Davis. "I thought Poovey wo uld be' the gu y on my tail, but 1 coul d tell by the way he was ridin g that it was Chris. 1 started riding a little tight - worrying too much about guarding my lines." " I stuck my front wheel in the re a few times, just to let him know 1 was there, " said Carr. " I noticed that he started riding defensively, tr ying to block me." Carr hounded Davis for eight laps be fore pulling alongsid e the leader as they raced down the back straight Carr do ve under Davis in tum three wh en the personable North Carolinan charged to o ha rd into th e comer and slipped wide, "I pulled alongside Will, and he panicked," sai d Carr. " After that, I sn uck under him and just put my head down." Once in the lead, Carr began to take a different racing line through the comers. Carr would enter the comers a bit wider and carry a straigh t line th rough the apex of the turn before squaring it off. "The apex wa s real slippery and you had to stay uprigh t," said Carr, "The line was a bit wider entering the comer, and that was a little danger ous if there was someon e behind you. They could stick it to ya' if they wanted ." Carr ex ten ded h is lead with ea ch passing lap, and at the finish enjoyed a four-second margin of victory. The sixtime series champ wheelied across the finish line with one hand raised . Davis held on to se cond, althou gh Hill had manag ed to close in d u ring th e final stages. When the checkered flag flew, Davis led Hill by only five or six bikelengths. "I don't know if he was 'slowing up or if 1 was getting faster," said Hill. " I think he made a couple of mistakes, but so did L I'm glad that the track grooved up , thank God . 1 just can't ride that nogroove slippery stuff. If I could have gotten through turns three and four better, 1 might have had a chance of catcing Will" Poovey ran strong for the first half of the race. and applied considerable pressure to Hill. The q u ie t Te xan dropped off the pace later in the race, h ow ever, but his fade wa sn' t d ue to fati gue . " I w ent w ay low on one lap, trying to get past Hill," said Poovey. "I splashed through some mu d and must have packed up my rear tire. 1 tho ught I had a flat becau se it started sliding all I- over." Kevin Varnes finished a distant fifth, topping an all-out war between himself, King, Lew is and Farris.
