No dabs for Darrow at PITS Vintage Trial By John Silva AUBURN, CA,MAR. 5 Premier Heavyweight Advanced rider Ste ve Darrow pos ted a dean rid e an d a pe rfect score, besting Premier Ughtweight winner Ken Marecak at the Mammoth Bar OHV area during the second event in the 1991 Pacific International Tria ls Society Vintage /Beginner Series. Ten sections were offered, many of w hic h featured up to four sp lits, sending the riders to lines of varying difficulty . The majority of the sections wo und up and down the clay hillsides, wi th the res t on a short loop tha t traced through the sand near the American River. Rain showers the previou s n ight made for m uddy places in some sections; competitors hunted for traction on more than a few slick climbs. On the other hand, the added moisture made the deep sa nd of sections five and six m uch easier to negotiate. The scattered as sortment of granite boulders provided the best traction except where they became covered with a thin coal of greasy day by the competitors ' passing tires. Mud was not a p roblem in the park.ing lot, as the entire staging/ p a rkin g area had recently been re-graveled with some heavy-duty stones. Of course, the river provided plenty of running wa ter. The PITS dub did their part to keep the waters pure by placing hay ba les in strategic stream-side locations to filter out an y sediments. Section th ree was particularly in te resting and drew a fair-sized gallery of spectators ; the location also offered a view of the rider's descent d own neighboring section four . Just past the start gate of section three riders entered a stream-bed and con tin ued upstream th rough small jumbled boulders for most of the sectio n's len gth. Poin ts lost here were the deciding factor in several close contests. O ne such contest was the Mo dern Classic Advanced class as Bill Scarlett and Rocky Robinson emerged from three loo p s tied with 17 points each. Scarle tt got the nod by virtue of his 22 deans versus 20 for Robinson. The Modem Classic Intenned iate class was just as dose, with Steve Rasmussen and Dennis Thom pson dr opp ing only three points apiece. The blue ribbon went to Rasmussen with 28 clean sections versus 27 deans for second-place Thompson. The junior Advanced div ision did battl e on the tough "two" line, with justin Oakley beating je re m y Appel by a mere five points, 19 to 24 points, respectively. The junior Intermediate set was championed by Ya ma ha- mo u n te d Gr eg Erw in, who cle aned 29 sec tio ns and dropped onl y three p o ints for the en tire da y. In th e Novice ran ks, Lance Rose impressed all on h is little 50cc machine by card ing a perfect score of zero to top the class . Results PREM H /W ADV: I. ~ D.-rrow .
