OK, FEB. 25-26 Charlie Orr spanked the competi tion by winning bo th Open P ro class ma in s a t th e two-day ind oor short track in the Hardy Murphy Coliseum. Friday night, Orr bla st ed the field by lapping nin e of the 13 rid ers that started the race , Orr, on hi s Low Buck Rac ing Team Ha rteyDavid son 600, w a s n ever really threa te ned. Andy West and Bret Bradd y were tough at th e s t a r t, but Dale jennema n foug ht his way through the pa ck to take second on hi. G rand Island Harley-Da v id son. joe y Duvall slid h is Kawasaki into third, giving Braddy fou rth and West fifth. Saturday 's track lo o ked m ore like a motocross track in turns one and two until after th e time trials. Then the track cre ws smoo thed it up and let the war begin. Orr once again looked like the ma n to beat, but Braddy had his Scott Adams-tuned Harley hooked to the tr ack and was riding the w heels off of it. Orr hel d ba ck and wai ted unti l Braddy tired and made a mistake, then stuffed his bike into first place. Braddy then ha d to ho ld off jenneman, who had worked his way up from a seve nth -p lace sta rt. jenneman gave Braddy everything he had, but Braddy won the fight for second as Orr took the win. Jenneman settled for thi rd, Jason Veager moved into fourth and Duvall was fifth. FEB. tr It seems as though 112 dual sport rid ers and a small group of college stu den ts ow e the environmentalists a thank you of sorts. February 27 marked the third running of the Cal Pol y Penguins ' Hi Mo u nta in Dual Sport Ride, an event which serves as a replacement for the Hi Mountain Enduro of years past. In 1991 the mduro never happened because em';' ronmental impact reports neglected to include the . pood turtle, whidl enviromnentalists capi talized on. effa:tiveIy killing the eoduro, Out of its ashts rose the Hi Mountain Dual SportRide. Thi s yea r's 140 roile course again used the Ca l Poly campus in San Luis Obispo as a staging area. Th e route qu ic kly led the riders o u t o f town and onto sce nic Pre fu m o Canyon Road, which offe red views of the su rr ound ing cou ntrysid e, Morro Bay and the Pacific Oce an . After winding d own See Canyon Road the riders foun d themselves in the first of many sections that would len d uni queness to the event - a mile stret ch of Pismo Beach. Following the sands of Pismo, the riders hit the pav em ent on Lopez Drive for the trip out to Hi Mountain Road, a d irt road complete with swi tchbacks, stream crossings and great v iew s ' of the Santa Lucid Wilderness. More pavement then gree ted the riders, who followed Pozo Road out to the Pozo-LaPanza OffHighway Vehicle Area , home to the most difficult sections of the ride. The less adven tu rous or more street-orien ted riders could bisect the area via a graded d irt road. For th ose riders whose tastes ran towards trai ls, two opti onal loops were incorporated. Both offered singletr ack trails, rocks, ruts, and whoops for rider amusement. After playing at Pozo, the rid ers p icked up Highway 58 which led to the seco nd unique section. Alan Stevens, a local ranch er and mot orcycle enthusiast, lent a section of his land to th e Pen guins that had two motocross practice tra cks on it, both of which proved to be challengin g venues for wringing out a dual sport bike. The nex t stop was at another ranch. courtesy of Mike Ryan, which included an eight-mile loop an d a barbecue lunch. The loop cons isted of wooded trails, some fast fire roa ds , an d a cree k crossing which left an interestin g odor clinging to the Jess cautious . Paved roads led the group back to San Luis Ob ispo after a day well spen t with friends and motorcycles. Though th e Hi Mounta in Enduro will always be missed, the comradeship of the Hi Mou ntain Dual Spo rt Ride will remain, and the members of the Cal Poly Penguins might be able to catch up in school inst ead of floundering in the massiv e wake created by organizing an enduro.
