I I then he did that big wheelie and I figured tha t would break his conc entration," sa id Carr. "I just waited for an opening." That opening came on the very next lap, as Davis again wheelied coming out of four and was forced to enter tum one a bit wide. Carr dove to the low line and that was all she wrote. Carr slipped past and im medi a tely be gan to pull away from the stru ggling Davis. "Man, I wa s sitting on th e fro nt of my ga s tank try ing to ke ep my fron t wheel down," explained Davis. After struggling to find a wa y past Veeder for six full lap s, Poovey finally mana ged to work past the New Yorker as they powered out of tum four on lap seven . "He was tou gh ," said Poovey, "but he was hold ing me up. " On ce past Veed er , Poovey put his head down and began to chip away at the 10- bikelen gth gap between himself and Davis. Method ically, Poovey inched closer and closer to Davis un til he was only a hair behind. From lap nine until the finish, Po ovey shadowed Davis' every mo ve, bu t was un able to find a way past. At the finish, Carr wh eelied past the ch eck ered flag w ith two seconds to spare over DaviS and Poo vey. Veeder held on to a respectable fourth, while Steve Morehead, Craig Estelle, Ronnie Jones, Andy Tresser, Varn es and Rod ney Farris rounded out the top 10. "The track dried up a lot," said Carr . "Unlike other' races here, ton ight yo u had to really hammer it and slide the ass end around becau se yo ur fro nt wheel would go off the groove if you didn't. You couldn't pole-putt because there wa s so much rubber laid down on the groove . Throttle control was ver y imp ortant - if you shut off too much, your front end would wash out.
