Morehead brl1liant on Barberville dirt By Dave Hoenig B ARBERVILLE FL, MARCH 5 , teve Morehead kicked off his yearly trip to Daytona for Camel Motorcycle Week in grand style, as he slid to the win on Volusia County Speedway's fast half-mile dirt oval. Morehe ad , who is celebrating his 20th year of dirt track racing, topped a potent field of racers as he swept both the 600 and 750cc Expert classes. , "It's a really good way to start off the week," said KK /Shepard/ F~S H-D/ Motion Pro /Bell/Storz /Dragoo / Zoomsponsored Morehead. "My 750 Harley is . really hooking up and Taylor White's 600 - well, all you have to do is show up and ride it." Over 100 riders filled the evening's professional program, and over 150 amateurs showed up to do battle during the day. The 750cc class was filled with stars from the AMA Grand National Champi- . onship Series; many of the new and old teams were on hand to get in some track time. Larry Pegram and Brett Landes were on hand aboa rd their Team Undo S Ho ndas, as wa s Davey Camlin aboard his new Skip Eaken -tuned Ha rley. Former Grand National Champion Chris Carr was a surprise entry. "I came to race my 600, but we really came to test out the 750," explained Carr. "We have an allnew chassis that we have to get d ialed in." Although he joined team M&M Racing late during the '93 season, Ohioan Scott Stump showed up fitter than ever and made his presence felt by winning the first, and fastest, 750ccclass heat race. Will Davis was elimina ted in the second 750 heat - he crashed hard and sat out the rest of the evening. "I was trying to pass Carr on the inside, but there was no way, so I tried to go o u tsi de real quick. I hita slick spot and it was all over. I tried to save it, but I high-sided pretty badly." Morehead went on to win heat two. Stump got a great jump off the line in the IS-lap main and jetted out to an early lead , but Morehead method ically reeled him in, then slipped by a t the halfway point and steadily pulled away. . "I was looking to go under Scott, but he was holding such a tight line tha t every time I tried to go by him, I got a really bad push," said Morehead. "I had to go high, but there was really more traction out there anyway." "That was 20 years experience wo rking against me. He just rode right around me," said Stump, after his excellent ride was bettered by Morehead. The large 600 class had four hea ts, w ith w ins go ing to Carr, Moreh ead , Dave Hebb and Roger Du rkee , In the main, Durkee got the holeshot over Hebb and Moreh ead, but Morehead q uickly took over and pulled away. Ca rr took over second by the halfway point bu t couldn' t close on the fast-disappearing Morehead . Durkee he ld third until a my sterious engine miss caused him to turn the pos iti on over to Hebb. Chris Evans was also able to get by Durkee for wurth. ~ Volusia County Speedway Barberville, Florida Results: Mar 5, 1994 ch 750 PRO: 1. Steve Mor ehead (H·D); 2. Scali Stump (Han ); 3.
