journalist Alan Ca thca rt and Robe r t Tapscott, Carter wished to be scored in both classes. AHRMA officials allowed the three racers to compete in both classes simul ta ne ously, if they sta rted the race with the second row. Remar kably, Ca rter left behind the Sen ior Sin gles class and blitzed through the Open Singles field wi th relati ve ease aboard his '94 Ducati Supermono. Carter ran down ea rly overall leader Rodney Fee, and after a game of cat and mouse, scored the wins in both classes with a extra-fast trip around the speedway on the final lap. "That was fantastic , 1 felt great;' said Carter, a former Grand Prix competitor. "This is the first time that I've ever wo n a race at Day tona. I love the place." Twenty-five en tries filled the starting grid at the start of the IS-lap Sound of Singles race - eight in the Open Singles class, and 18 in the Senior division. Rodney Fee got the jump on row one aboa rd his factory Wood-Rotax 620, and looked to be the man to bea t as he quickly established a su bs tan tial lead over h is competitors. Lex Van Dijk did his bes t to stay with Fee, b ut the diminutive rider was too quick. . Double-class entrants Carter and Cathcart assumed control of the Senior Singles class from the get-go, and were quickly slicing their way through the Open Singles class. Heinrich Boje ran strong in the early stages of the race, but dropped out of contention in the latter stages. On lap two, Fee enjoyed a three second lead over Ducati-mounted Nardiu cci Adrian, but Carter and Cathcart had made tremendous progress and ran in third and fourth, respectively. The faster of the two, Carter was by Adrian with relat ive ease, while Cathcart had a bit tougher time and lost touch with Carter. Once into second, Carter slowly but surely began to reel in Fee, and closed to his tailpiece by lap six. Carter made the pass for the lead on that lap, and immediately pulled out a ID-bikelength lead. But just when all looked said and done, Fee p ulled out the stops and caught up to the leader. Tho ug h he did all he could to repass Carter for the lead, Fee eventually found him self once again a considerable d istance behind the winner at the finis h. Ca thca rt ca me home third overall and third in Op en Singles; second in Senior Singles. Van Dijk held on to a d istant fourth in the Open class, afte r Adrian slowed with a n apparent mechanical problem, while Russ Mattson rode home third in the Senior class. Tho ug h Taps cott wasn't able to weav e through the Open class as deftly as Carter and Cathcart, he scored fifth in the Open division and ei g h th in the Senior class. " I had a bit on reserve," said Carter, referring to the game of cat and mouse that he played with Fee. "I was much faster than him in the infield, but his bike was a rocket on the straightaways. The Ducati was a dog in com parison - it didn't have anyt hing on the bankin g." . "I knew Ca rter was coming," said Fee , who enjoyed the benefit of Ron Wood in his co rner. " I put my h ead down and tried to stay ahea d. 1 d id all I could." £.'\' Want Ad infonnation -(310) 427·7433 SAVE IT with a sleeve from Fee (W-R); 3. Alan Cathcart (Due); 4. Lex Van Dijk (Yam); 5.
