the Dutchman Yamaha, the bike did great, and I'm happy to be here in Winner's Circle again," Gray said. "I'd have liked to have been fir st, but I'll take third." Gardner brought th e Erion Rac in g Honda home in fourth, the last team on the lead lap. Fifth and sixth were decided at the line wi th K. W.S. Motorsports' Kev in Hunt drafting past Anderson / Dynamic Racing's Jan Svensson a t th e line. Svensson was riding a five-year-o ld Yamaha FZRI000, after he had trouble getting parts for his new machine in time. "We found that Wiseco put the wrong rings in the box with the pistons," Svensson said. "We knew the rings were coming, but there was two feet of snow in Lou isville and they spent two nights t here w it h a n ove rnigh t courier. At Phoenix we'll have the new bike." Svensson wasn't too anxious to finish a lot higher than he did. "I told my wife tha t if I ended up in the winner's circle this year I'd shave my bea rd off, and I've had it for 26 years," Svensson said. a Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach , Rorlda Results: March 11, 1994 I .Team Kawasaki/Muzzy (!(aw); 2. Upcoming rounds Round 2: Phoen iz, Arizona - March 27 Round 3: Pomona, california - April 10 AMA/CCS Middleweight Team Challenge series Round 2: Daytona International Speedway Hairy win for AGV Sport By Henny Ray Abrams h en Scott Za m p ach decided to gro w his hair a lit tle longer, he ne ver th ou gh t that it might cost him a race, bu t it very nearl y did . Jus t be fore th e halfway p o int of the AMA /CCS Middlew eight Team Challenge at Daytona Int ernational Speedway, Zampach's hair fell in to his eyes causing him to overshoot the ch icane while he was chasing race-leader Moto U berty . " A ll m y hair went into my eyes," Zampach explained. "I went into the chicane and could hardly see ." He stopped, brushed the hair back, then re-joined the track from the old chicane instead of wh ere he left the track, as the rul es mandate. The team was d ocked a lap and when Zampach's teammate, Shawn H igbee, took over the team' s AGV Sport Honda CBR600, he thought W they had no chance. Zampach made an impassioned defense of his actions to AMA Referee Speedy Kell and the penalty was lifted. Not long after that, H igbee was rolling into Victory Lane with the team 's second win in five days. "O u r m ot orcycle is bone stock and it's slow," Zampach sa id in Victory Lane. "Moto Uberty took off and their bike was so fast, I thought, in the first half lap , that if the y finished they had it won," Then the Moto Lib erty Honda expired " near th e halfway point, while holding a commanding lead, and Zarnp ach inherited the lead. Though he wo uld briefly relinquish it, Higbee gained it back and went on to win by 10.791 seconds on an overcast and occasionally drizzly day. The tea m completed 28 laps (96.68 miles) of the 3.56-mile course at an average speed of 98.344 mph. Second place, in their second race as a team , went to the J.5. Racing team of Jim Lester and Sean Sweeney. After blowing up their race motor the previous weekend, the team fitted a stock motor to the team's Honda CBR600 and knew they'd have to work hard through the infield to make up for the power deficiency on the banking. "We've got low horsepower and these guys were going b y u s on the banking. If they didn't go by me on the banking, they'd get me in the chicane," said Jim Lester, the J. in J.5. Racing. Sean Sweeney, the S. in J.5., brought the bike home during a light rain. "I let up just enough to allow for the conditions ." Third place went to Hyvac Racing's Paul Sloan and Kevin Noo nan, the pair running second early on before dropping back one spot. The visit to Victory Lane convinced them to con tinue on in the series. "This is a good way to star t out the season," said Paul Sloan, who rode the first leg. "We decided if we finished in the top three today we were going to do the nationals all over the country and try to go for the championship. I know this really gets us psyched up and read y to go." Bill Knox and Ed Hoffman made up the Team Plunger entry that finished fourth on a Honda CBR600, with TBR Racing's Sean Goff and Jon Schocht, also Honda-powered, in fifth. The one-hour team challenge w as green-flagged a t about 4:15 p.m. on an overcast day, with threatening skies moving through the area . Mike Barnes was the lead rider on the Moto Liberty entry and he escaped with stunning alacrity. At the end of the second lap he had be tte r than a four second-lead, upping it by almost two seconds a lap . If the team of Barnes and Takahiro Mori had finished the race, the rest would have finished nearly half a lap behind but that's not the way it happened. Just after Mori took over near the ha lfway poin t, he came to a rest near the chicane after the Hond a's engine blew up on the back straightaway. . The order wo uld shuffle with many of the top teams changing riders, and when the shuffling ended it was Zampach in second on the AGV Sport bike behind the USC Racing en try of James Schaeffer and Rob e rt W righ t. Wr igh t was ri ding in place of Craig Gleason, who'd injured his righ t han d during the AMA/CCS weekend. Schaeffer ran first, handing off to Wright at the 36-minute mark. Ant ici p atin g bad we ather, the team fitted a cut slick on the front an d a Dunlop OOT on the rear. Zampach pitted at the 39-minute ma rk, handing off to Higbee , and the tea m still held a co m m a n d ing lead . The n he was informe d abou t th e one-lap pen alty an d began to implore the AMA official to change his m ind. When he d id, Zamp ach thought it showed flexibility on their pa rt. "H e (KelI) told me he 'd review th e situation, and he did," Zainpach said. "It sho ws the y're ope n-mind ed enough to see the rider's viewpoint." "I guess the secret today was just to stay on two wh eels," Higbee said in Victory Lane. USC Racing continued to run at the front, until running out of gas in the chicane with about 11 minutes to run. That mo ved J.S. Racing in to second, where they would finish . "Th e rain didn't worry me, but it changed the pace of the race a Iittle, " Lester said. "We made it through and that's what matters." The battle for third raged until there were less than 15 minutes left in the race, when Kevin Noonan moved past Ed Hoffman. "It feels great to finally be here in Victory La ne," Noonan said. "The r a in helped us out quite a bit, because a lot of the guys backed off and that made me push it quite a bit harder. I was able to pick up some ground then. " Sloan was n't surprised tha t the team gained ground once the wea ther turned sour. "I came in early and th at was the plan. Kevin is excellen t in the rai n," Sloan said. Jon Schocht brought TBR Racing 's Honda home fifth, a finish that surprised the team's first rider, Sean Goff. "We're two amateurs trying to get some track time," Goff said. "We were second and third on the first lap, then the horsepower difference took over. We're using a stock engine. It's never been out of the frame. We were hoping for a top 10 finish." a Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach, Rorlda Results: March 10, 1994 1. AGV Sport (H on) ; 2. )5 Racing (Ho n); 3. Hyva c Racin g (H on) ; 4.
