Round 1: Daytona Intern tio alS eedway a n p . '..,·:R ADR E · O AC : .. A AlC Stfafley~Davidson T Sports Series : M C win zampach stays pe .~ By Henny Ray Abrams Photos by Abrams & Daytona International Speedway DAYfONA BEACH, FL, MAR. 13 ill ey's Harley-Davidson's Sco tt Zamp ach capped off a perfect week with his fourth win in four tries at Day tona International Speedway, though this one was the swee test. Despite winning 20 Harley-David son Twi n Spo rts races over the pa st three years, the three-time defending Twin Sports Champion had ne ver won on Sunday during Motorcycle Week. That all changed today. . "I've been trying to win this one for a while," Zampach said after winning the fir st of 11 round s of the Twin Sports series. "I've won the fall race, but never this one. I was really confident going into this race this morning. In practi ce, I went out on new tires and crash ed on my first lap in the horseshoe - I'd never done that. Then I found out that Shawn (H igbee) did the same thing. My bike suffered some pretty good damage, and to put the bike back together and be here, I'm real happy." The race was typica l. fo r the H-D 883's at Daytona - close to the end, with the race being decided from the exit of . the chicane to the checkered flag. This time Zampach was in the wrong place, bu t Bartel's H-D's Shawn Higbee made a mistake on the banking allowing Zampa ch to break the draft and race to the flag w ith a cush ion of .301 secon ds . Zampa ch added this win to his two wins in the tw o Middleweight Team Cha llenges and an AMA/CCS Twin Sports victory. Zam pach completed the seven-lap, 25-mile race in 15 minu tes, 42.889 seconds at an average speed of 95.146mph. "I knew to be able to catch Scott at the end of the race, I had to get a slingshot draft," Higbee said after finishing second. "I couldn't just follow him to be able .to pass. I didn't have the moto r to do that, so I knew that I had to hang back as long as I could without losing th e d ra ft . I second-gues sed m ys elf halfway between NASCAR turns three and four and cracke d off the throttle a little bit to get more a distance between us. I just lost it a little and came up short at the end." Th e b attle for thi rd was between Brian 's H-D's Ron McGill and Hal's HD's And y Fenwick. McGill came out on top on the track but los t inthe teard o wn, b ein g disqualified for engine modificatio ns, which han ded th ir d to " Fenwick. "He was disqu alified for a cylinder that didn't meet proper specifications," said Roy Janso n, the AMA's Pro Racing Director. "The re were visible signs of modification and the cylinder d id n ' t meet the p rop er dimen sion s." Janson said that McGill has 48 hours to file an appeal; there is a $300 charge for the filing . McGill said he wo uld appeal the decision. Ironically, in Victor y Lane McGill said, "Tha t wa s one of the toughest races for third I've ever had . And y (Fenwic k) put in a reall y good show and deserves to be up here as much as I do." Fenwick had gotten hung up when a ·backm arker crashed in fron t of him in the chicane and he had to take evasive T (Above) Scott zampach (1) led Shawn Higbee (2) at the start of th e HarleyDavidson Twin Sport Serie s and (right) at the finish. action . McGill took the initiative and beat Fenwick to the flag, though it will 'b e a few weeks befo re it ' s decid ed whether it was all for naught. Matt Wait finished fourth, Suburban H-D's Dick Koehle r was fifth, and JW Racing' s Jim Whitaker was six th. The fight for seventh wa s waged betwe en five ride rs, with Fletcher's H-D's Shawn McNary getting th e sp o t. Of the 41 starters, there were 30 finishers . The start belonged to Zam pach, the Milwaukee rider lead in g the charge through tum one with Higbee, McGill, Low Coun tr y H-D's Chuck Blackmon, and Matt Wai t i n tow . The ord er changed at the end of the first lap, then again soon into the second when Blackm on crashed in turn on e. He briefl y tried to re-start his 883 before pushing it behind the wall. Out front, Higbee was in the lead, his engine appearing sligh tly stronger on the banking as he drafted pas t Zampach for the lead . McGill and Fenwic k paired up and took leave of the pack, with the l!:ext few spots running solo. Zam pach took the lead back to end the third lap. Higbee led the fourth lap, with Zamp ach takin g it back aga in, goi ng into turn one on the brakes, to start the fifth lap . McGill stayed in front of Fenwick th e whole time ; Wait was running alone in fifth, as was Koehler in sixth, and Whitaker in seventh. . The fifth lap end ed with Higbee out front, a spo t he held to the end of the sixth lap . Then Higbee wen t wide exiting tu rn one allowing Zampach to go past an d ta ke the lead, not the most adv anta geous spot to be in on the final lap - but Zampach made it wo rk an d held off Higbee at the line. . " I kn ew - being her e all week and racing with Shawn and the other ride rs what it was goi ng to come down to," Zam pa ch said . " It w as pretty much a two-rider battle." An d y Fenw ick h ung back fr om McGill, then took over third just before the chica ne . It turned o ut to be the wrong place to be when a lap ped rider fell in front of him. McGill scooted by to finish third, only to have it taken away from him in the teardown. Wait w as a lone in fifth, as was Koehler in sixth, with McNary lead ing the freight train for seventh. Jim Whitaker got by McNary, wit h Richie Morris getting by Randy Texter for eighth, and Yvon DuHamel getting the bette r offellow racing leg end Roger Reiman for 10th. eN Daytona International Speedway Dayto na Beach, Florida Results: March 13, 1994 H-D lWIN SPO RTS FINAL: I.
