·D I TR CK:\··.. SerieS : Round 1: Daytona Municipal Stadium IR ational Championship '.. .. A ·AMA'Grand N Canadi an Steve Asel tine (36) and Jason Fletc her (65) ran nose to tail througho ut the 25-lap 883 Nati onal. Aselti ne led every lap to score his first-ever 883 Nationa l win. tra ffic than I did," said Poovey. "It could hav e gone eithe r way." What Poovey didn't know, however, was that Land es was closing in quickl y. When the white flag flew, Landes had closed to w ith in five bikelengths of Poovey, and was ev en closer as they raced across the finish line. " I sta yed the same d istance behind him throu gh most of the race," said Landes. "Then a t the end, 1 sta rted to go fast er and fas ter. 1 think 1 cou ld have done something with him if there were a few laps left." At th e finish, Carr enjoyed a full straightaway lead over Poovey and Landes . Dav is fell victim to a flat rear tire with five laps to go and was passed for fourth by King, but heroically managed to hold on for fifth. "Things s tarted to get w iggly out back and I thought, 'Oh no, not now: " said Davis. "I wasn't about to p ull off either, 1 just rode her out. Scary!" Jones was sixth, while HilI worked up to seventh after a close encounter with another rider at the start. "Rogers spun sideways off the line and bumped into me: ' said the usually fast-starting Hill. "From there on it was just a struggle through the pack." Coolbeth, Veeder and Atherton rounded out the top 10. 883 After a series of heat races and semis run early in the afternoon before the track was watered, the stage was set for the 25-lap Harley-Davidson 883 Nationa l. After over four hours off of their machines, many of the 883 racers were anx ious to get the' racing underway maybe too anxious. Thanks to numerous first-tum crashes and o ne turn-three altercation between Jason Fletcher and Springsteen, that saw Springsteen fall and break his wrist, the red flag flew several times. The fourth restart was the last, as all 16 riders managed to make it thr ough lap one wi thout crashing. Jovial Canadian Steve Aseltine put his Don ahue H-D/ Delano Sports Cen. ter -backed 883 in the lead, a head of . Moroney's H-D rider Fletc her, Sp rin gsteen and Dayton a Budw eiser ' s Scott Stump. Aseltine, the winner of the 1991 Dayton a Short Track Grand Na tional, pu t his considerable experience at the circuit to good use and guarded his lines well, despite the relentless p res sure from Fletcher. The two riders ran nose-to-tail throughout the en tire 25-lap race and pulled weB clear from the rest of the field. "About the only place that 1 d idn't try to pass Ste ve was up on the wall, doing a bermshot," said Fletcher. "You couldn't move off the groove because it was so slick, so 1had to just wait for him to make a mistake." That mistake never carne, as Aseltin e stayed glued to the groove and raced home the winner. "I just tried to ride smooth and keep it out front," said Aseltine. "M y face shield kept fogging up and 1 had to open it on the straightaways to unfog it. That was my only problem." After running a solid third throughout most of the race - despite suffering wit h a br oken righ t wrist - Springsteen pulled off the track on la p 20 wi th a blown m ot or. Stump was the direct beneficiary of Springsteen's misfortune, and the now-svelte rider raced home third. " It's hard to go fast on a track like this on a 600 - imagine how hard it is to go fast on an 883. Th is is th e sli ckes t track I've ever been on : ' sa id Stump. "All those restarts happened because everyone was trying to win the race at the s ta r t. You can't do that on these ' bikes - you have to be cool." n, Municipal Stadium Daytona Beach, Rorlda Results : March 12, 1994 (Round 1 of 22) TIMED Q UALIFYING , !. Terry Poovey (19.393); 2.
