I got a national nu mber and raced at Ascot. I came off the penalty line once on a Triumph, in the Wood-Rotax era, when I was a Junior, and jette d to the front. I was told by my sponsor, Don Stevens, tha t Roxy was go ing crazy about it . I went wide in turn one. O h, well . The reaso n Roxy wa s good, is that he felt the sa m e way about dirt t rack motorcycles that Scalzo does - the way I feel, but can't describe. Than ks. W. National Ha re and Hound, Ted Hunn icutt had a high- speed crash an d was injured . Pau l Krause was th e ne xt racer in the area. Withou t hesita tion, Pa u l th rew aw ay his cha nces for a good finish to help a fellow compe titor and friend. As I rode up a few minutes later, what I saw wa s Paul kn eelin g down bes ide his friend , wi th a look on his face of true concern for ano the r human being. Paul s tayed with Ted and got him safely back to the p its so he could be taken to the hospital. You never know how you will react when faced w ith d ecisions like th is in your life, but in my book , Paul Krause passed wi th flying colors. Bill Full mer Jr. Oceansi de, CA Scalzo 1 Well, he did it again Joe Scalzo, I mean. Every time I read one of his exposes, I get the chills. The latest was about Roxy Rockwood (Issue #8, March 2). I didn't kn ow Tommy was his son. I grew up fan ta sizing, loo king 'at the Triu mp h m ot or cycl e factory team po st er wh ich had Rockw ood on it. FAX (404) 934-3112 lent article by Joe Scalz o "Roxy Mos t Rema rkab le" (Issue #8, Ma rch 21). I've appreciated a good race from both sides of the fence an d the best person at provid ing p ublic add ress coverage of what w as going on wa s the late Roxy Rock wood. He fully unders tood th at the fa ns could be be tter fans if they knew mo re of what each racer had accomp lished to d ate, what tr acks w ere fa vo re d b y w h ich comp etitors, who h ad recently found new horsepower or experie nced new s u ccesse s. He w as, in dee d, a n encyclopedia of racing, bu t it was hardea rn ed . I' ve seen h is crib sheets tha t sys t e m a ti ca lly r efle ct e d each s ta r 's rec ord, b y National w in s, b y trac k type...he a lw a ys d id h is h ome w ork. And mo st im po rt an tly , he drew fans' attention to action on the track; as Scalzo sta ted , tha t action cou ld be d eep in the pack. Roxy highl ighted racer d ram a - he never wa nted fan attention for himself. Roxy has left two sons in addition to the departed Tom Rockw ood . John is still a career Navy man and Tim. a former s ucces sfu l d irt tra cker and road racer, resides and works in southe rn California. Again, good work Sca lzo - a n d thanks Cycle News. Mike Vancil San Jose, CA Great, good, bad I have three things for you. First, wha tever you are paying Joe Scalzo it isn't enough. The first thing I look for when Friday rolls around are his articles. His matter-of-fact st yl e isn't clutt ered up wi th meaningl ess, flowery prose, and he manages to pu t a human face on the legends of which he writes. Well done, sir. Second, finally som eone wrote a reas on a b le re vi ew of Hond a's CBI000 (Iss u e #8, March 2). I bought the first one available at the dealership after seeing the machin e in Japan seve ral months earlier, a nd I love it. Th e ma gazines moaned a bou t the noti on that it' s "slow." Slow? No, it won't run 150 mph, but on any bike with no type of fairing , yo u approach 100 mph with a full appreciation of the speed at whic h you are traveling. It has supe rb suspens ion, comfortable ergonomics, and the engin e eliminat es all the problem s associated with air-cooling. I own four sportbikes and I spe nd more tim e on the CBI000 than all the rest combined. Enough said. Fina lly, Micha el Scott's piece on the imminent demise of the 500cc GP bikes (Issue #7, February 23) was long on possib ilit ies and short on realities. If it is financiall y unfeasible to support the SODs, how can the automobile factories continue to build Formula One machines? Is there a direct relation to auto sales based on race performance, or rather, is it indirect? Same with the bikes - you can't bu y wha t they race, but victory means sales. And if he is correct, and the SODs go the way of the 750cc two-strokes, so be it. I'd pay to see the Lawsons, th e Doohans, and the Schwantzs race on mopeds. Keep up the good wo rk.
