AMAlCCS Middleweight Team Challenge series Round 1: Daytona International Speedway AGV Sport takes Mints in win By Henny Ray Abrams DAYfONA BEAG!, FL, MAR 6 ha w n Higbee is used to follow in g Scott Zarnpach on a racetrack. The pair are longtime ri vals in the Harley-Davidson TwinSports class. But he wasn ' t used to following him on a racebi ke, so he wasn't sure what to expect when they teamed up on the AGV Sport Honda CBR600 in the inaugural AMA/CCS Middleweight Team Challenge, the successor to the GTU class . "It worked out great," Higbee sa id after the team pulled off a dominatin g win in the one-hour race a t Daytona International Speedway. "It's a pretty unique situation here, racing with Scott Zampach as my teammate." "It 's much nicer to have Shawn Hi gbee as a teammat e than a competito r," Zampach said. " He's a grea t guy and he 's been going really fast on a lot of d ifferent bikes. This was a last minute deal for us. It carne up onl y this morning tha t we wou ld be teammates and ride th e bike. We're real happy to be here." The winning team completed 28 laps of the 3.56-mile cou rs e a t an average speed of 99.581 mph. Zampach rode the first part of the race, handin g off to H igbee a t the 32minute mark with a sma ll lead over the Mint Racing entry. (The new rules mandate that a rider change mu st take place past the one-third point of the one-hour race, but before the two-thirds point.) Mint Racing 's Jeff Williams pitted a lap after Zarnpach, but a lengthy pit stop to re-attach the seat cost them any chance of a victory. They would settle for second, 42.048 seconds behind. "The seat came off and I had to ride with a loose seat:' said Mint Racing's Williams, who tearned with Andrew Trevitt . "1 saw Scotty out there and went for it. He'd take me in corner one and I'd take him in the dogleg and se him in the draft" S Lik e the w in ni ng tea m, th e second place finishers were a first time coupling. "It was our first race together," Trevitt said. "We we re n 't really sure what w e were doin g . I h a ven 't ridden a fo u rstroke in about three years . We were a little worried about th at but everything wen t well.' Mint Racing ran in second much of the race, d ropp ing back to third when Raceco's Ronald McGill came by w it h less than 20 minutes to go . But the Raceco Moto-Guzzi failed on the 20th lap in the chicane and Mint Racing moved back up. Third place w ent to the Jicarilla Apache Race Team of Rad Greaves and Roy David Nicholson, fou rt h to Ma rk Law son and Michael Crepeau of Tea m White Trash, and fifth to Ya maha o f Leesburg Racing's M ik e Luke and Damion Weber. The top five teams fin ishe d on th e lead lap. The eight row grid was filled wi th 32 entries for the Middleweight Team Challenge, though at least three of the teams were using the one-hou r event to test their 600cc Supersport machin ery. Zampach jetted into the lead from the middle of the front row , with Hyvac Racing 's Paul Sloan in pursuit followed by Apache Racing, and Yamaha of Lees..burg. Sloan was us ing a stock motor in th e team's Hond a C BR600 because th ey'd blown a head gasket in the race motor. Jeff Williams of Min t Racing moved up to third on the third lap as Zarn pach began to pull away. His lead was nea rly 35 seconds on the fourth lap as he tried to ease away. "1 like being ou t front, but it's definitely a disadvantage for.d rafting, n Zarnpach said. "We had about three laps of practice and have a lot of jettin g wo rk to do ." Mint Racing wa s back up to second at the 2O-minute mark, whi ch was when the rider changes began to occur. One team that never got the cha nce to cha nge was the Hyvac Racing team. On the 14th lap, the chain on the team's Hond a stre tched and jumped off the sprockets. Sloan pu t it back on , then the master link broke. "It felt like it was out of gear," Sloan explained of the proble m which h ap pened as he was going up the banking out of the infield. Higbee took over for Zampach at the 32- mi n u te mark, th e same la p that McGill took over the Raceco machine from Pete Johnson. A lap later Williams brought the Mint Racing bike in to fix the seat and put Trevitt at the controls. The pit s to p allowed Higbee to ga in more breathing roo m an d the race was, effectively, over. "I've raced two races here at Daytona and I've taken tw o first pla ce finishes," sai d Zampach, who earlier in the day won the H-D TwinSports race. "1can 't do much mo re than thal " With 20 m inutes to go , Trevittt had jus t over a second lead on McGill, but ¥ cGill was closing an d would shortly go past only to see his race come to an end in the chica ne a few laps la ter. Trevit t would take over the runner-up spot an d keep it to the end. "And rew (Trevi tt) and I jus t teamed up to have som e fun," Trevitt's teammate Williams said. "1didn't expect this. Coming from racing 400cc bikes in Canada, this is a thrill comin g here to race a 600cc bike . This is my second time on the bike here and it just seems to work. It flies." Roy David Nichol s on brought the Jicarilla Apache Rac e Tea m H ond a CBR600 home after tea min g with Rad Greaves . The team is sponsored by an Apache tribe in New Mexico, where the Michigan-based team had spent time with children of the tribe. C\' The win In the Middleweight Team Challenge went to AGVSport.
