> O O R S Rounds 5/6: Sunrise Valley Raceway MT COS C"'~MFGOIden State SerIeS' Bran.des racks 'em. up (Left) Michael Brandes gave his competition this view during both rounds as he swept the 125cc Pro class on his way to the Golden State Series Championship. (Below) Cory Keeney (377), Rick Ryan (43) and Spud Walters (1W) fought for control at the start of the second 125cc Pro moto. By Scott Hoffi nan ADELANfO, CA, FEB.2f>.'lJ ichilel Brandes was unstoppable as he took h is PVK / FMF I Answer/ Motul-backed Kawasaki 125 to four consecu tive moto victories in the Pro class during th e final rounds of CMC's 18th running of the FMF Golden State Nationals hosted by Sunrise Valley Raceway. About 500 ride rs showed up each day to see who would be crowned the 1994 champ. Bran des ha d little trouble taking hom e titles in both the 125ccand 2.5Occ Pro cla sses after.series rival Terry Parson s injured his knee on Saturday. On top of . the series titles, Brandes, Rick Ryan and Travis Preston won seats in an F-16 fighter jet for a day. In the youngster classes, Jimmy Nelson, Kyle Harris and Brian McG avran took home new motorcycles. On Saturday, Brandes rode like a rnad- . man to capture back-to-back mota wins in the 125cc Pro class; but not before battling with th e likes of Team Sp litfire /Hot Wheels riders Pedro Gonzales and James Dobb. As the gate dropped for Sunday's first rnoto, Brandes roosted his Varner-built KX into the lead followed closely by Gonzales, Rusty Holland and Joel Albrecht. Before the racers coul d find a groove, Brandes and Gonzales engaged in a duel that would last until the final lap . Oblivious to the battle ahead, Holland rode his own race in third as Dobb, NCY's Don Upton and Mik e Chamberl a in h ad it out fo r fourth through sixth. Up front, Brandes and Gonzales were stuck to each other like glue, but neither could shake the other loose. Lap after lap the tw o ride rs swapped the lead as they railed the fast sand track. "Good track - I really liked it," Gonzales said. At the halfway point, Gonzales pulled into the lead and it looked like the end for Brandes, but he held his ground and kept the Splitfire/Hot Wheels rider within striking distance. With one lap to go, Brandes was determined to take the win and shot into the lead for the final time . When the checkered flag flew, Brandes M led the field followed by Gonzales, HoIland , Dobb and Upton. "It makes me feel good when I beat the factory guys since I am only a privateer," Brandes said . In the second moto it was FMF-backed potato man Spud Walters leading the massive field as Brandes, Rick Ryan and Cory Keeney trailed . Walters held the lead during the opening lap, but on the second lap Brandes roosted. to the fron t. Back in the pack, Gonzales, Dobb and Chamberlain we re bangin g th eir way to the front. Up front, Brandes was on the gas and mo ving away fas t. Walter s, on the ot he r hand , started to falter.. "I'm coming off a wrist injury and I'm not 100"10 yet," Walters said. Walters , Ryan and Keeney slip ped backward as Dobb, Gonzales and Chamberlain m ov ed into th e second through fourth sp ots . With three laps rema ining, Dobb had no chance in matching the pa ce of Brandes. When it was all over, Brandes captured the moto win, the overall an d the series title. "I felt good : I was on the gas," Brandes said. "Everything just seemed to click." Another close title chase occurred in the BOec Beginner class as John Meusling and George LaMonte battled until the end. On Saturday, Meusling took the win as LaMonte lost valuable points with a 1-4 finish. Brian Hulsey led the field of screa ming minis during the first lap until Scott Howe dropped him back one spot. Meusling and Frankie Navarro were quickly working their way up to challenge for the lead when they flew past Hulsey for second and third spots. Meusling mad e a double pass on the second lap to tak e over th e top spot as Howe held on for second . The top spots were up for gra bs, and before Meusling could enjoy his lea d , Navarro pulled a slingshot move that put him into the lead. Howe fell back to fourth when LaMonte moved into second. On the last lap, Navarro held a good lead, but right before the finish Meusling repassed LaMonte for second. In the second moto it was another knock-down drag-out fight as Meusling, LaMonte, Howe and Navarro fought until the end. Howe led the race until the sec- ond lap wh en Meusling took over. Howe, Na varro an d LaMonte all took turns in the runner-up spo t as they diced for position. When the riders crossed the line it was Meusling with the win and the title, while LaMonte, Howe and Na varro followed. Action continued in the beginner ranks , as the 125cc class was just as exciting . In moto one, Ulysses Pollard took the lead until a bobble allowed Roger Fonseca to take it away. Onlap two, Pollard would fall to third as Mike Cinqmars moved into second . Back in the field, Adam Pierce worked his way up from a poo r start. With one lap remaining, Fonseca trash-eanned his chances for the win by crashing. Cinq- mars gladly took the win with Pollard and Pierce following. In m oto two, Pierce pulled the holesh ot wit h Pollard and Cinqmars hot on his tail. Pollard went down on the first lap, giving Cinqrnars and Mark Worke ntine the runner-up and third spots. Cin qmars and Workentine were b reathin g down Pollar d's neck for the enti re race. Cinqmars turned ou t to be the spoiler as he moved past for the win on the straightaway during the last lap . m Sunrise Valley Raceway Adelanto , California Results: February 26-27(Rounds 516 of 6) PIW BEG, 1.
