FEB. 6 Michael Brandes an d Tallon Voh lan d bea t all comers in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, respectively, w hen the GFI North Winter MX Series came to the Turlock MX facility. When the gate dropped on the first l25cc Pro moto, local favori te Rusty Ho lland led the pa ck into the first tu m , followed by Brand es, Jeff Pestana , Rick Ryan and Tyson Vohland. However, wi thin the first lap Pestana had gone down, taking much of the pressu re off the leaders . The race then became a battl e between Holland and Bran d es, who d iced for the lead several tim es durin g the 10-lap moto before Hollan d could pull away eno ugh to ens ure the moto win . Th e second 125cc Pro mota saw the sa me g roup o f ri ders, w ith the addi ti on o f Craig Keeriey, racing for the lead . In a textboo k pass on the h igh-speed uphill, Brandes go t by Ho iland and began to pull away from the rest of the pack. Bran des never looked back, and with a combined 2-1 finish took the overall victory. Tallon Vohla nd grabbed the holesho t in the first 250cc mota of the da y and was closely followed by Ryan, Holland and Pestana. This quarlei set a blisterin g pace on the track as each rider attempted to catch the man in front of him . The first major p osition cha nge came when Pestana gra bbed a h andful o f throttle th r o u g h th e rh yt hm sec tio n a n d carried that momentum th ro ug h th e tum and onto the next str aighta wa y. Pestana 's drive allowed him to rail the next comer and get past Ho llan d, who was not ha p py w ith this move and immediately wen t abou t catching Pestana . As the du o went over the up hill doubl es, Holland dove to the 'ins ide, blocking Pes ta na o ut of the n e xt turn a n d repassing him. Whi le this du el was being waged, another confrontation was taking place in the front of the lead pack. Ryan set up Tallo n Vohland on the spectator str aighaway, and wh en they entered the chicane at the end of the straight, Ryan dove to the inside, momentarily forcing Vohland off the track . With few laps rema inning, Vohland was unable to recapture first. Vohland finished second behind Ryan, followed by Holland, Pestana , and Cory Keeney in that order. Mota two sa w Tallon Vohl and again with the hol esh ot. Wanting to avo id a replay of the first mota, he im medi a tely ran away and h id from the other ride rs. The battl e for second became a three-way race betw een Holland, Pestana and Brandes. Pestana , how ever, got"into tro uble and went down, taking himself out of the top five. Holland was able to hold off the advances of Brandes to finish second . Bran des finished third , wi th Rick Ryan and Dan Paladi no rounding ou t the top five. Results s. AM l /W S/BK: 1.
