(Left) Terry Cunningham prepares for the second loop. The former champ had llme-keeplng troubles and finished eighth . (Above) Larry Roeseler approaches the finish, the remains of his raincoat trailing behind. When the final check was thrown out, LR. slipped from fourth to 11th. (Below) Jimmy Lewis prepares for France's Gilles Lalay Classic. He finished 15th overall and second A 250. in a deep puddle. His bike's throttle landed in the mud and stuck w ide open, sucking the icy water into his engine, and the champ was forced to drop out. Hawkins will count the round as one of his two "throw-away" rides. . Ru ssell was the only rider to cle an the first 'ch eck on loop two, as H ines dropped a point. Hatch had made a mistake while programming his computer, and los t lime before switching ov er to hi s m anual tim e-keeping s ystem; he dropped two points and gav e Hines the advan tage he needed. Russell's zero had moved him into a tie for the lead, but he was still in second on tie-breaker points. At the next - and what was to be the last - check, Hines was again fastest . He dropped just four points, while Russell dropped five and e ve ryo ne e lse dropped seven or more. Hatch had tro uble with a bottleneck and lost a whopping 12 points, eliminating his chances at the overall. Hines had an incredible sev en-point total at the finish , and Ru ssell was a minute back with eight. Pepper was tw o more points down with 10, and Smith snared fourth with a 12-point total. Hamel showed his versatility with his second-straight fifth-place finish, while Hatch was sixth. Harden, Cunningham , Davis and Pat Garrahan rounded ou t the top 10 overall. "I had a little trouble with traffic," said 'H in es, who was on the m inute behind Ru ssell. "I went over the b ars trying to pass Russell, but that's racing." "That was fun," sa id Russell. "Just like riding back home (in Ohio). If 1 can get through Texas (round three) okay, I'll be in good shape when we head back East into the woods. Of course I'll still have Lucerne (Southern California) to worry about in October." "The tougher the better," said Smith, who had piloted a Honda CR12S. "I ride in this stuff all the time, so it's probably my fault that the weather's like this.'~ 0 Quicksilver National Enduro Coalinga, California Results: February 20, 1994 (Round 2 of 9) OIA:. I.
