Brooks tried to gather it up, but the bike made a hard left tum into the hydro barrier and stalled. Brooks lost several seconds trying to restart th e bike and began the heat in last p lace. Mike Healey blazed to the front of the pack from his third row starting position while Lewis, who had started directly behind Healey in row four, mo ved into second place. He aley began to stretch his lead at every tum, and built up a comfo rtable margin over Lewis, all the while driving the sol d-out crowd into a frenzy with his acr obati cs ov er the 75-foo t fi nish-lin e d oubl e . Heal ey grabbe d the firs t heat win follo wed b y Lewis and Br ia n Ma nley . Brooks charged through the pa ck to finish sixth. Ray Crumb sta rted near the front in heat two and grab bed the holeshot off the start, but Shaun Kalos, the '93 series runner-up, soon caugh t up to him and the tw o riders waged war for the entire hea t, with Cru mb prevailing. Brooks' poor heat-race finish meant that he wou ld be starting up front in the l Q-lap main event while Lewis, Healey an d Kalos would start fu rther back. At the start, Au stra lian Kim Ashkenuzy grabbed the point and led Brooks and Lewis for several laps before Brooks was able to w restle the lead away. Meanwhile, Healey was charging through the pac k and managed to catch Broo ks and Ashkenuz y near midrace. Healey was cl early goi ng fa s t, and it looked as thou gh he might take the lead. But disa st er s tru ck as Healey endoed over a double jum p approaching the comer for the finis h lin e, came up short and suffered a nasty, high-speed get-off. Healey was shaken, but he would return to the action and finish 11th. With three laps to go, Lew is di sp osed of Ashkenuzy and se t o ff a fte r Brooks . Lapped tr affic brough t Lew is to Brooks ' rear w h eel a n d forced a last-lap showdown betw een the teammates that Brooks won by a mere bikelen gth at the finish. He won his title last year due to Balashov's misfortune, then suffered a fractured knee in the 1993 Team Final . His 17 points for the three rounds dropped him from a tie for the point lead to third overall. A fall in his first ride, coupled with an indifferent performance over both days, cost him his place in the top scorers' heats . D Brandes, Holland battleto Golden StateMX glory By John Sliva SACRAMENTO, CA, FEB. 12 icha el Brandes posted firs t overall in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes during round three of th e CMC North Golden State Nationals at Sacramento .Raceway, while Ru sty Holland earned the runner-up position in the 125 and 250cc Pro con tests and also topped the 500cc Pro class . Almost 300 riders were on hand to vie for a share of the prizes and contingency money at this round, which had been resched uled due to severe January stor ms. But today riders and fans enjoyed perfect spring-like conditions. M All together, 17 races pl us qu ali fiers were h eld on a course that offered a challenging layout for the racers and an excellen t view of the action for the fans . As a bonus, riders took home a Golden State Nationa ls hat courtesy of Sacramento Raceway, in ho nor of the race facility's 25th anniversary. The 250cc Pro cla ss started with a Rick Ryan holeshot, as Holland, Casey Johnson, Spud Walters, Jeff Pestana and Brandes gave chase. With a full gate of p ros, the action was hot and furious with go od dicing all th e way ba ck to 20th plac e. Ryan completed lap one with the lead, but his tum in first soon end ed, as Holland po wered around him to take the le a d o n la p tw o , th e n Joh n s on passed Holland to move in to the second spot. Ryan was thi rd , wi th a cha rging Pes tana mo ving up to fourth. Johnson's tenure on the leaderboard came to a crashing halt on lap three; Johnson wasn't injured in the fall, but d id not continue. With Johnson out, Pestana moved to third and kept the p ressure on Ryan. By midrace, Holland was firmly in control on his CPE-backed Suzuki. Pestana eventually passed Ryan to snag second, which he held to the checkered flag. Ryan, Brandes and Walters filled out the top five. Ryan rocketed into the lead again to start moto two, but Brandes was sha rp and knifed past Ryan to take the iliad. Brandes pulled away from the field and en joyed a suprisingly large lead at the end of lap one. Ryan and Pestana battled aga in fo r th e s econ d s p ot wi th Joh nson, Wa lters and Tyson Vohland also in the hunt. H olland had sta rted w ell back in the pack but worked his w ay up to sixth by lap tw o. Out fro n t Brandes was fla wl ess, s tayin g out of reach of th e dice for second between Pestana a n d Ryan, w ith Joh ns on and Vohland close beh ind. At the white fla g , Johnson ra il ed p ast Ryan to take second place, and Holland foun d an open ing to lay claim to fourth ahead of Vohland. Brandes styled a t the finish jump to celebra te first overall with Johnson second, an d Ryan, Holland and Vohla nd third through fifth . In the 125cc Pro featu re, t h e NC Y/ Yoko-spons ored Vohland led the first moto with Brandes, Ryan , Butch Smith and Greg Tirheimer in p u rsu it. The top five positions remai ned unchanged for the first fou r laps while the a ttention tu rned to Holland, who w a s m ountin g a n inc redib le cha rge through the pa ck after co mp leti ng la p one in 15th. Hollan d 's attack lasted two la p s leaving mos t of th e fiel d in h is wake, with Tirhiemer the final vic tim. Out front, Vohland and Brandes put on a good show, but the confiden t Brandes took the lead for good on lap four . From there, the leaders held the ir positions to the checkered flag. . Holland gated well in moto two and went on to lead all six laps for an easy win. Smith, Brand es, Walters and Ryan assumed second through fifth positions where they remained unchanged for the duration of the moto, with the exception of a last-lap pass by Ryan over Walters. Pestana put in another consistent race to post 6-6 finishes for sixth overall.
