·VO E . · . IC S·:· America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Letters totheeditor.. Pomona okay 'ed In regard to the letter from Gary Partin in "Voices" (Issue #4, February 2) concerning the upcoming AMA U.S. Supe r- bike race in Pomona, California, I would like to clarify a few points. The Pomona track at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds has a long history of automobile road racing dating back to February 24, 1952, when the first documented race was held there. It was an AAA l 00-mile stock car race pr omoted b y J.C. Agajania n . Sports car r acing beg an at Pomo na in 1956 and continued through the early sixties. Such no tables as Carroll Shelby, Bob Bond urant and Dan Gurney hav e compe ted at Pomona. An AMA feasibility test was cond ucted at the facility in August of 1992. Riders and team managers in a tt endance agreed that a motorcycle race could be run there if proper changes in configuratio n were mad e. At the request of the Fairplex, an oth er motorcycle test was held there in August 1993 to evaluate the impact on ambient sound levels and additional rider input was gathered. The race promoters will be restructuring the track in seve ra l areas, as requested by the riders and the AMA. Ample run-off areas and repairs to th e road surface , w here needed, w ill be m ade to provide an acceptable racing surface. For the spectators' enjoyment, the promoters will install two pedestrian bridges over the track and numerous gra ndsta nds for viewin g the race. A manufacturers' midway and VIP / hospitality facilities will also be on-site. We hope Mr. Partin makes plans to attend, because Pomona will surely be a very exciting round of the AMA U.S. Superbike Championship Series. Merril Vanderslice Westerville,OH Vanderslice is the AMA's National Technical Manager...Editor. Want ing Larry After attending the Anaheim and San Diego Supercross races, I was talkin g to ::fN ID S E Volume XXXI some friends and we agreed that something was te rribly wrong. Supercross races just don't seem to be as exciting as they us ed to be . Up until a few years ago , we would feel almost exhausted when we left a supercross race. Then we discovered what was w rong: no Larry Huffman. The announcer was okay, but he's no Larry H uffman. You know, there are some great first chair cellists around the world, and then there's Yo Yo Ma; there are some great basketball players, and then there's Michael Jordan. Well, there are some great supercross announcers, and then there's Larry Huffman. Larry would have had the e n tire crowd in Sa n Diego stand ing on their sea ts d u ring Michael Craig's performance in the semi (as he held off Jere my McGra th) , during th e 125cc mai n (as Damon Huffman came through the pack to finis h second ) and during the 250cc main as Craig aga in held off McGrath for the first half of the race. Instea d, we only had "s ta di um murmu r" for what seemed like five or 10 min utes at a time. Think back (way back) to how Larry would fi nd a rac e, anywhere on the track, and have the crowd excited - even if the race was for 12th place. I can't help but think that his absen ce has a lot to do wi th declining att endance. Come on and do whatever you have to do to get Larry Huffman back. Make sure he's got good spotters and let him hav e at it. I want to feel exhausted and exhilarated ag ain after my next supercross . Marty Haynes Place ntia, CA Chicanery fan I wis h .to express admiration and app recia ti on for the two articles authored recently by Henny Ra y Abrams . Th e firs t "Harl ey- Dav id son VR-I00 Private Tes t" (Iss u e #1, January 12) an d the "Chicanery" column (Issue #2, January 19). In particular, I would like to voice high p raise for the use of the word "Chicanery." It's exactly the right word, with s yn on yms being trickery, frau d, an d deception. I hope that Cycle News readers will hav e the pleasure of additional commentary by Mr. Abrams as Ha rleyDavid son contines the development of the VR-l 000. Gl enn Whitmore Port Orange, FL Death of a friend On Febru ary 14, the family an d friends of Cap tain Michael Tracy lost a wonderful man to a tragic shooting. He was a dedicated husband, father an d grandfather. He was not only a valuable member of the Palos Verd es Police Department , bu t an equally val uable member. of the Desert Vipe rs Motorcycle Club in AMA District 37. He ded icate d h imself to organ izing the Ad elanto G ra nd P r ix, which is enjoyed b y all. H is se rvice, u plifting smile an d won d erful personality will be missed . In your mem ory, Mike. T.e. an d Debora Turner Devore,CA Tracy was killed in a robbery attempt in . southernCalifornia...Editor. Wanting interviews I really enjoyed reading "Chicanery" by Henny Ray Abrams (Issue #6, February 16). How ab ou t an interview in ever y iss ue? You would only have to in te rview 50 guys a year - and I kn ow there's at least that many people with interesting views. M .
