The two Ho n d a r ide rs, Dahl a nd Quinn , en gaged in a furi ou s battle for the first couple of laps. Quinn tried to pass Dahl with a daring leap o ut of "The Pit: but Dahl kept his cool. On lap thr ee, Qu inn made the pa ss on Dahl to take the lead and never looked back. Dahl kep t Quinn in his sigh ts , b u t was unable to close the gap. Mich ae l Hamilton AMA A ateur5upercross m Gravett tears up Houston Amateur SX By Kat Spann HOUSTON,IX, JAN. 22 ev in Grave tt had a banner d ay, winn ing th e. 125cc (12-15) You th m ain eve nt during th e amateur supercross that was held on the same track that the pros rode in the Houston Astrodome. , After winning his heat race, Grav ett shared the holeshot with Kristy Shealy in the main event. Gravett charged and was able to assu me th e lead with Shealy hanging on in second p lace. Donny Jackson then ho unded Shealy, b u t she was determine d to ke ep h er place as the two riders swapped position three times before the en d of the fir st lap . Shawn Smith came fr om be!tin dto challenge Jac kson for fo r thi rd place, taking over the position 'on lap three. Gravett stayed out of tro uble and led the charge to th e checkered flag, scoring the wiIl._Shea ly never let up in her efforts to catch Gravett, and she finished in secon d place. Smith had to settle for third followed by Jackson and Brad Cannon. In the 125cc B main, Erick Vallejo snared the ho leshot and led the race w ith Trav is Young in second. Todd Kirby, Robbie Floyd and John Shippen battled ove r third plac e for three laps un til Gra vett joined the fray, pa ssing them all and leavin g them to fight for fourth place. Gravett then began to pres sure Young and passed him for second place. Vallejo crossed the finish line first, followed by Gravett, Young, Kirby and Shippen. Barry Otts jumped out fro nt in the 85cc (7-11) main with Derek Gerdes on his rea r tire. Brad ley Barham and Zack Williams engaged in a heated battle for third, with Williams eventually passing Barham over the tabletop. Barham retaliated, pa ssing William s before the end of the lap . In the meantime, Gerdes was reeling in Ot ts inch by inch as the two railed the / comers and negotiated the jumps side by side.
